Amazon.com Review
The transformation from a manufacturing-based economy to one that's all about service has been well documented. Today it's estimated that nearly 75 percent of Americans work in the service sector. Instead of producing tangibles--automobiles, clothes, and tools--more and more of us are in the business of providing intangibles--health care, entertainment, tourism, legal services, and so on. However, according to Harry Beckwith, most of these intangibles are still being marketed like products were 20 years ago.

In Selling the Invisible, Beckwith argues that what consumers are primarily interested in today are not features, but relationships. Even companies who think that they sell only tangible products should rethink their approach to product development and marketing and sales. For example, when a customer buys a Saturn automobile, what they're really buying is not the car, but the way that Saturn does business. Beckwith provides an excellent forum for thinking differently about the nature of services and how they can be effectively marketed. If you're at all involved in marketing or sales, then Selling the Invisible is definitely worth a look.

From Library Journal
"Don't sell the steak. Sell the sizzle." In today's service business, author Beckwith suggests this old marketing adage is likely to guarantee failure. In this timely addition to the management genre, Beckwith summarizes key points about selling services learned from experience with his own advertising and marketing firm and when he worked with Fortune 500 companies. The focus here is on the core of service marketing: improving the service, which no amount of clever marketing can make up for if not accomplished. Other key concepts emphasize listening to the customer, selling the long-term relationship, identifying what a business is really selling, recognizing clues about a business that may be conveyed to customers, focusing on the single most important message about the business, and other practical strategies relevant to any service business. Actor Jeffrey Jones's narration professionally conveys these excellent ideas appropriate for public libraries.?Dale Farris, Groves, Tex.

From Booklist
Advertising professional Beckwith startles and disarms all potential doubting Thomases with one fact--that by the year 2005, 8 out of 10 Americans will be working in a service business. Chapters here are remarkably short; they are intended to convey one point (summarized in one sentence in boldface italics) and are blessedly free of jargon. Hints and tips cover the conventional four Ps of marketing--product, promotion, place, and price--in an irreverent and iconoclastic manner; nothing is sacrosanct. Stories from every corner of life illustrate and drive home messages. In a quandary about pricing? Read the Picasso story to remember, "Don't charge by the hour; charge by the years." About the value of research? Forget questionnaires and focus groups; instead, ask individuals what improvements are needed--not the dreaded "What don't you like?" A very human, much-needed book to savor and be refreshed by. Barbara Jacobs

Digestible Insights
By Michael L. Perla
As others have written, this book is not about creating a complex marketing design or plan. What it does offer is quick, a page or so, USA today-like snippets of insightful observations about marketing in general, and service marketing in particular.
As the title indicates, selling and/or marketing an intangible service is a different process than tangible product marketing. As the author writes, most people cannot evaluate the skills of an accountant, or lawyer, or any number of professional services. We often look for tangible proxies that indicate the professional's level of expertise and success (e.g., fancy offices, degrees on the wall, presentation, etc.).
If you read this book in its entirety in one session, you are bound to remember nothing in the sea of facts and tidbits (click on the table of contents link to get a feel for the topic areas). I've found the best way to read the book is to ponder on a few points every night and/or week, while attempting to apply them to a salient situation in your life. Overall, this book has some interesting and useful insights, and is a good read when you have a few minutes to spare.

THE Marketing Book
By O. Halabieh
As Harvey Mackay notes on the cover "The one book on marketing I'd have if I could have just one. A CLASSIC." This books changes the way we think about marketing: "It begins with an understanding of the distinctive characteristics of services - their invisibility and intangibility - and of the unique nature of service prospects and users - their fear, their limited time, their sometimes illogical ways of making decisions, and their most important drives and needs". Harry then goes on to discuss a number of fundamental topics: surveying and research, planning, positioning and focus, pricing, branding, communicating and selling, nurturing and keeping clients etc.

Below are some excerpts that I found particularly insightful:

a) "Your opportunities for growth often lie outside the confines of your current industry description." - This can be reworded to apply to one's personal career

b) "In most professional services, you are not selling expertise - because your expertise is assumed, and because your prospect cannot intelligently evaluate your expertise anyway. Instead, you are selling a relationship. And in most cases, that is where you need the most work."

c) "First, accept the limitations of planning...Second, don't value planning for its result: the plan...Third, don't plan your future. Plan your people."

d) "Positioning (Al Ries and Jack Trout) says: 1) You must position yourself in your prospect's mind. 2) Your position should be singular: one simple message. 3) Your position must set you apart from your competitors. 4) You must sacrifice. You cannot be all things to all people; you must focus on one thing."

e) "To succeed spectacularly in a service business, you must get all your ducks in a row. Marketing is just one duck. But it is one very big duck."

f) "...And for marketing purposes - for the purpose of attracting and keeping business - a service is only what prospects and clients perceive it to be. So "get better reality": Improve your service quality. But never forget that the prospect and client must perceive that quality."

g) "Services are human. Their successes depend on the relationships of people...But you can spot some patterns in people. The more you can see the patterns and understand people, the more you will succeed - and this book as written with the hope that it will help you do just that."

h) "Nothing beats experience, of course, but reading books about others' experiences comes in a competent second. The risk in learning only from personal experience is that too often, we draw conclusions from too little data - we learn too much from too little. We also tend to credit our company's successes to everything that went into them...And so we keep repeating things that hurt our business."

One of the best features of the book is the way its written and structured. Each area is covered through small stories featuring numerous real-life examples. This makes the book very practical and enjoyable to read. All in all, a great book on Marketing and one that is recommended for anyone. We are all in some aspect a marketer of services.

Worth the price for 1.5 pages rated below
By S. Hall
It's a good read, but there is a page and half that has had a major impact, showing me where I have a huge blindspot in business and how I stop my own progress. This page and a half is possibly the most important material I've read in a book in several years (for me it applies directly).

The author talks about the Fallacy of Planning in a business setting. He ranks plans in this order:

1. Very Good
2. Good
3. Best
4. Fair
5. Poor

Why is Good ahead of Best? Simple, to arrive at Best takes orders of magnitude more planning than Good. Also, who defines Best? How much time is spent creating the Best plan? Will Best stand the test of time? Can everyone agree on Best? Would Good work just as well as Best in the real world? Is Best satisfying the client's need better than a Good plan?

Choosing the "Best" plan leads to Paralysis by Analysis. Good plans allow for quick action and constant improvement. The most successful people in the world have acted on Good plans that they have refined over time. An actionable plan is more successful than a plan that never leaves the drawing board!

Personally, I've fallen into the Best trap many times. There is no such thing as a "Best" plan. Going forward the "Best" plan will be the "Good" plan that I can put into action and refine over time!

A lightbulb went off in my head when I got this concept. Thank you Harry for this valuable lesson.

I Sailed with Magellan, by Stuart Dybek

Following his renowned The Coast of Chicago and Childhood, story writer Stuart Dybek returns with eleven masterful and masterfully linked stories about Chicago's fabled and harrowing South Side. United, they comprise the story of Perry Katzek and his widening, endearing clan. Through these streets walk butchers, hitmen, mothers and factory workers, boys turned men and men turned to urban myth. I Sailed With Magellan solidifies Dybek's standing as one of our finest chroniclers of urban America.

From Publishers Weekly
Dybek's third work of fiction (his first in over 10 years, after the story collections Childhood and Other Neighborhoods and The Coast of Chicago) comprises 11 elegiac, interlocking stories narrated by Perry Katzek, a young Polish-American growing up on Chicago's racially diverse South Side in the 1950s and 1960s. Although it lacks the narrative momentum of a linear novel, the book offers a powerful, cumulative portrait of the lives of Perry, his family and the people in his neighborhood, where "it seemed that almost every day someone lost teeth at one or another of the corner bars." "Breasts" follows three men with only tenuous connections to Perry, including Joey Ditto, a gangster who keeps getting distracted from making a ruthless hit by the ethereal forms of past lovers. "Blue Boy," which begins as a tale about a sick youngster, ends as a gorgeous contemplation of loss. The strongest stories deal directly with Perry's exploits. In "Orchids," Perry and his friend Stosh try to scheme their way to Mexico by stealing exotic orchids, and in the much-anthologized "We Didn't," Perry and his girlfriend's erotic lakeshore tumbling ("Swimsuits at our ankles, we kicked like swimmers to free our legs") is interrupted by the discovery of a dead body. "I was the D. H. Lawrence of not doing it," Perry reflects, "the voice of all would-be lovers who ached and squirmed." Indeed, all of these beautifully written stories teem with aching recollections. They are lyrical odes to wasted lives, youthful desires, vanishing innocence and the transformative power of memory, which is "the channel by which the past conducts its powerful energy; it's how the past continues to love."

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Whenever Perry Katzek's much loved Uncle Lefty takes him up on the roof of his building to see the pigeon coop and the great grid of Chicago, he says, "Welcome to Dreamsville," which could serve as an alternative title for this magical suite of linked stories. In his first book since the unforgettable Coast of Chicago (1990), Dybek writes of his hometown with the poignant realism of Henry Roth, the mythic intensity of Leon Forrest, and the poetic otherworldliness of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Eleven perfectly formed and exquisitely sensual tales--each so saturated with personality, event, and revelation they feel like novels--illuminate transforming moments in Perry's life. Imaginative, adventurous, and romantic, Perry falls in love and loses loved ones, witnesses violence and experiences transcendence, while Dybek masterfully and tenderly conjures the edgy ambience of Chicago's ethnic neighborhoods and the great divide between the bucolic North Side and the broken-glass-strewn, tavern-spiked industrial South Side, where bravado, musical gifts, and witty repartee are highly valued. Set in a chimerical world of ice and flowers, soul-bruising hard work and sweet dreams, ruthless mobsters and die-hard friends, Dybek's mesmerizing tales coalesce into an epic of survival and spiritual growth that is, by turns, gritty, surreal, hilarious, tragic, and bittersweet. Its Inventiveness and Spirit are Undeniable
By Bookreporter.com
Stuart Dybek's I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN arrives more than a decade after his previous book, a short story collection titled THE COAST OF CHICAGO. While it's neither a blockbuster nor a doorstop tome like Jeffrey Eugenides's long-awaited MIDDLESEX or Donna Tartt's years-in-the-making THE LITTLE FRIEND, I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN is definitely worth the wait, serving as a reintroduction to a writer who captures his old Chicago neighborhood with documentary detail and raconteur flourish.
Despite its billing as a novel, I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN is actually a series of short stories that have locales and characters in common. All feature a teenage narrator named Perry and all are set in the Little Village community of Chicago during the early 1960s. Dybek lovingly and often humorously evokes this time and place through telling observations.
Poor families use old bed sheets for curtains and veterans order shots for friends who didn't come back from the war. It's a dangerous, often discouraging neighborhood, and in strong, unfussy prose Dybek describes "the daily round of life where bag ladies combed alleys and the homeless, sleeping in junked cars, were found frozen to death in winter. Laid-off workmen became wife beaters in their newfound spare time; welfare mothers in the projects turned tricks to supplement the family budget; and it seemed that every day someone lost teeth at one or another of the corner bars."
Fortunately, Dybek lets his lively characters --- including a junior high writing prodigy named Camille Estrada and a slob hitman named Joe Ditto --- run wild in this setting. Rather than engineering plots and scenes for them, Dybek simply lets them tell their own stories, a rare talent that gives the book a personal, unrehearsed quality. Plus, it makes for some truly weird goings-on. As a coming-of-age story, I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN eschews any predictability in favor of a dreamlike flow of events and characters, many of which are supersaturated with local color.
There is, for instance, the Chickenman, who walks around town with a chicken perching on his head and pecking corn off his tongue. And there's Little Village's unofficial child saint, Ralphie Poskozim, who was born with blue skin: "The blue was plainly visible beneath his blue-green eyes, smudges darker than shadows, as if he'd been in a fistfight or gotten into his mother's mascara. Even his lips looked cold."
All of these strange characters are filtered through Perry's perspective, and as the novel progresses, he grows up and his concerns become more adult. Fortunately, as Perry gains more freedom, the stories don't lose their charm or their sense of wonder.
Memory works in flashes, not in fluid narratives, and it allows for exaggeration of facts. In the end these chapters cohere into something larger than a short-story collection, but the book is not like a proper novel. This is certainly not a criticism: the form of I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN may be unclassifiable, but its inventiveness and spirit are undeniable.

Excellent writing, deeply known characters
By J. Rosenberg
I especially liked the stories in the first half of this book, those that focus on main character Perry, a boy growing up in a Polish neighborhood on Chicago's Southwest side in the 1950s. They are deeply felt, wonderfully detailed, highly realistic and with excellent characters. Toward the middle are a few stories more "poetic" in style that appeal to me less. The last stories return to the old neighborhood and again, the perfectly noted details and highly individualized characters drew me back into the lives of that time and place. Highly recommended for those who enjoy short fiction and anyone who appreciates excellent writing.

Among the best contemporary fiction I have read in years
By R. M. Peterson
I will start with the conclusion: READ THIS BOOK. It is exhilarating and poignant, funny and wise. It consists of eleven interlaced stories about Perry Katzek, the son of an immigrant from Poland, growing up on the South Side of Chicago in the 1950s. The Chicago setting, the kaleidoscopic episodes, the sweaty grittiness of urban, immigrant life, and the rather picaresque nature of the narrative all remind me of Saul Bellow's "The Adventures of Augie March", though, to my mind, I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN turns out to be an even better book.

No doubt much of it is based on the personal experiences of author Stuart Dybek, who was born in 1942 and grew up in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. Indeed, much of the book may well be personal memoir draped with but the thinnest of fictional garb. Still, it reads more like a novel (or a collection of inter-related stories) than like a memoir.

Those who are from Chicago and are now between the ages of 55 and 75 might treasure the book just a tad more than the rest of us, inasmuch as it features such places as Twelfth Street Beach, Sportsman's Park, the Rocks, Meigs Field, Douglas Park, the outdoor market on Maxwell Street, the Sanitary Canal, and the Baha'i Temple. (I certainly would treasure any novel half as good about Philadelphia - my hometown - during the same years.) But one need not be from Chicago to find the book special. What it has to say about memory, childhood and youth, and the human condition should speak to most, and especially to males who grew up in an urban, working-class setting.

The book abounds with lovable characters and with sparkling anecdotes. Among the former are Perry's father (whom he and his brother call "Sir" because one night while watching "Leave It to Beaver" he had said how nice it was that Wally and Beaver called their father "Sir"), his uncle Lefty who played the sax and the horses, his best friend Stosh, and his erstwhile girlfriend Laurel Elaine Levanto who left Perry stranded in the Fire Truck Graveyard after the high school prom. Among the anecdotes is this one about Denny "the Fish" Mihala: when the fourth-grade teacher Sister Philomena asked the class, "If birds come in flocks, and fish in schools, what other kinds of groupings can you name?", Denny eagerly answered, "A dozen donuts!"

The motif that struck home with me the most had to do with memory and nostalgia. Here is one such excerpt: "Who knows why certain humble objects - a bike, a sweater, a sled - are salvaged by memory or dream to become emblems of childhood? Childhood, an alternative universe expanding into forgetfulness, where memory rather than matter is the stuff of creation."

I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN is also noteworthy for its writing and craftsmanship. The stories are skillfully interwoven, and there are moments when Dybek's writing is brilliant, such as when he refers to a character gazing up at the nighttime sky, "aware that he was just another speck adrift in stardust on the absolute zero breath of God."

I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN (the title comes from a song Perry's brother Mick sang when they were kids) was published in 2004, which to my way of thinking still makes it contemporary fiction. I don't read a lot of contemporary fiction. Maybe I should make a point of reading more, because I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN is first-rate literature. It easily is one of the ten best books I read in 2012.

From Library Journal
In 1982, six patients appeared in California clinics displaying mysterious symptoms: their bodies were so stiff that they appeared to be frozen. Langston, currently the president of the California Parkinson's Foundation, was one of the first physicians to examine the patients. He discovered that they had all injected a "designer" drug into their systems that created symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease. Through excellent detective work and a good deal of pure luck, Langston located the chemical MPTP, which also produced Parkinsonian symptoms in primates. That discovery was of supreme medical importance, providing Langston and other researchers with the ability to test Parkinson's treatments on animal models. New approaches, including fetal tissue transplantation, could now be pursued. Langston's book intersperses discussions of recent research on Parkinson's while continuing to report on the progress of the "frozen addicts." A fast-paced medical detective format makes this a fascinating and immensely informative work. Highly recommended for most libraries.?Tina Neville, Univ. of South Florida at St. Petersburg Lib.

From Booklist
The fascinating story of 12 years in Langston's career takes him from clinician to organizer of the Parkinson's Institute in California. In the process and with the aid of his growing staff and several Swedish physicians, he "thawed out" George, Juanita, and Connie, three of six addicts he'd been called to see in 1982. The six had suddenly shown signs of advanced Parkinson's disease that included inflexible or "frozen" bodies and inability to communicate. An alert and imaginative neurologist, Langston eventually suspected a chemical cause because of indications that all six were addicted to heroin or had used at least some just before the onset of symptoms. Ultimately, Langston unlocked his patients to the point at which a long and tortuous medical detective story could begin. The happy conclusion for the successfully thawed three came after the use of various experimental drugs and the transplanting of, first, adrenal, and finally, fetal, tissues. Readers of many stripes should find this well-told tale exciting. William Beatty

The 6 frozen addicts case which started the search after the reason in so fast Parkinson's, and how to solve the problem.
By Gert Bo Thorgersen
I first discovered the story concerning these 6 frozen junkies when reading the book by Jimmy Moore and Eric C. Westman, MD.: “Cholesterol Clarity”, and then immediately ordered a copy. And I must admit that it has been a highly interesting and easy read book, even though it’s concerning neuro science, as it to me many times was like reading a good detective novel, so exciting that it was hard to put it down. A detective work by searching and actually many times by accidents were getting the best connections for the continuing following a trail.

It’s interesting in the book to read how many of the doctors whom the frozen patients first met, also the Danish chemical person we meet on the side 76, diagnosed them as cases of mental illness, actually the catatonic schizophrenia, neurogenic motor immobility and behavioral abnormality, and then just were expecting that it would turn over with time. And opposite to this how Langston concluded it to be Parkinson’s cases, after George Carillo was brought to the hospital, and there, among other, when laying on the bed, and having the arms were lifted up, it took 3 to 4 minutes before they had returned down to Georges side. And how Langston then was told the story from George Carillo, when after 12 days George got free from his body, by getting the L-dopa drug. The story about how he during all of the time had been totally clear in his brain and recognizing anything that was going on around him, but couldn’t talk, scream, move a finger, or not even an eyebrow, when feeling awful while doctors were doing painful or awful smelling stuffs against him for “waking” him up.

After George Carillo on July 16, 1982, ended in the Clara Valley Medical Center, California, and they there had concluded that he must have been hit by something in street bought heroin, and Langston then went to the news, for warning, fist 5 parallel persons are discovered, and brought in, but later on also previous historical shows up. The first of the earlier cases turn out to be about Barry in the twenties, who in 1976 after maybe not using a clean glass when making his heroin, ended at NIH Clinical Center after also first having been diagnosed as hit by catatonic schizophrenia. And we read about the research which there were made to find which chemical processes that were going on in his body and resulting in thus being hit by the hardest case of the Parkinson’s disease in such a short time. When Barry died 18 month later his brain showed up extensive sell loss in an area of the brain, which normally the case for the Parkinson’s patient.

But after Langston and his companions then in 1983 got an article in the Science, there first came a letter from a Dr. Naokata Yokoyama in Japan, now recognizing that he probably had been hit by Parkinson’s as result on his chemical work with MPTP back in 1964 to 1972. So he was called to USA for parallel research control as the 6 frozen addicts had been through. And then in Denmark a woman recognized that her husband Henning Nielsen, shortly after they had been divorced, suddenly had been frozen in the same way shortly before Christmas 1975, and then was brought to the Copenhagen Hospital 200 miles away. There he also first was diagnosed as being hit by catatonic schizophrenia, but another psychiatrist, the Dr. Welner, did not agree, and discovered that Henning could communicate via wrinkling of the eyebrows, and then he was send to the neurological ward. And it’s interesting to read how the 2 neurologists are making much work in finding the solution for what have caused his Parkinsonism. Nielsen had only during 2 weeks in the chemical firm Ferrosan A/S, being working with MPTP as part of a research program to find a new antidepressant drug. But at that time it was not known that MPTP was toxic so the two neurologists in the Copenhagen Hospital didn’t look at this during their research after the connection. It was very interesting to read about this case concerning Nielsen, as I am Danish, and I can’t recall that we ever in the Danish news have heard anything about this case. Nielsen was also brought to USA for during a visit there being measured.

But furthermore it also shows up that already back in the 1940s then the first synthesizing of the MPPP and the MPTP was made, by Dr. Albert Ziering, in Hoffman-La Roche, and resulting in a report in 1952. And after discovering that Ziering still is living, Langston has a telephone talking with him, and later, by another, in telephone is told what’s written in the report. And it showed op that after the 1952 report there then were made research with monkeys, and later with 6 persons of whom 2 died, and that these also froze up by the MPTP. And after this then in the 1980s DuPont had been testing an analog to MPTP, the TMMP. So there had been many parallel cases during the 40 years before Langston met the frozen George.

By Langston some of the studying persons are put on the work in going searching after other persons who might have been using the same heroin, and doing this by asking about the feeling they had been having in the arm the first 20 minutes after the heroin injection. Using this detail as the 6 frozen addicts had been telling about a different feeling which they actually they then had been having. Many persons are found, and after control interviews in the hospital some of these which looks to be correct, are chosen for following researches.

Concerning by surgery repairing the brain in Parkinson’s patients, we then read about how they at the same time in respectively the Swedish Lund Hospital, 20 miles straight east from Copenhagen, and in the Centro Medico in Mexico City, in different ways are working on this. And then in the chapter 15, “Miracles”, we read about how in New York, in 1987, it’s shown that they in Mexico City had solved the Parkinson’s problem for the patient Jose Luis Mesa. After this, when they then in other hospitals throughout the world, carries out the same adrenal operation, no one succeeds in getting the same result. Rather parallel to the first heart transplant back in 1967, as remarked in the book.

But in Lund they do the surgery in a more advanced way, by only cutting a hole of 1 mm (1/25 inch) in the skull and through this injecting healthy fresh aborted fetus to the correct places, instead as in Mexico, opening the brain. We then follow when George as the first one is send over there in 1989, among other this as the result of the politic from Reagan fighting against legal aborts in USA. And we read about how the actual surgery work on George is started at 8:00 in A.M. and then following what’s going on until George again wake up at 7:00 P.M. First how it begin by assembling the frame among other holding his head, then the CAT scanning for geometrical measures inside the brain, for the injection places. Then a doctor by microscope searching on the new aborted, around 8 weeks old, fetus brought in, after healthy parts that can be used, which he after 9:10 A.M. is starting to receive. Then at 2:30 when finished working with the fetus these then are brought to the surgery room under the biggest possibly security, for not destroying 5 hours work. Now they make the burr hole in the top of George’s skull and after this, by the special cannula, put down into the skull are injection fetus cells to the different targets. And while doing this one of the doctors again and again are take time of the piston forcing in the cells, and the time used in getting the piston out again, while the cannula to the new places, as years of research have found respectively 20 and 90 seconds being best for this, thereby destroying fewest injected cells, and keeping them very they are wanted.

When George again is back in USA they don’t realize that anything actually has changed with his health until the Swedish doctor HÃ¥kan Widner after many months again visits them, and discover, and shows, especially by parallel showings of new and old films that George has increased. And after this his health starts to progress faster, in returning back into being normal, and the same also concerning Juanita, the other of the 2 first selected persons of the 6 frozen addicts who had been in Lund.

Then on the side 219 we read about Connie, the last of the 3 of the 6 frozen addicts who was send for the brain surgery in Lund, but first in 1994. But before this the problem had been than from back in 1987 her daily amount of the L-dopa had been turned down more and more, and finally stopped in 1990 because she as the result of using the L-dopa had more terrifying hallucinations than the other. Concerning the problem by patients, who during years are using the L-dopa, we in the book read a letter from Lund, telling about how the nurses over there were scared by George as they never before had faced a patient with so awfully similar behavior. But concerning Connie, living home by her family, as result of not getting the L-dopa, she during years had not been able to move arms, legs, hands, head, nearly not talk, and so on, so Langston was afraid that maybe she inside here frozen body no longer was mentally normal. So it’s very interesting, and delightful, to read that just 5 month after her surgery in Sweden, when she by her family is brought to Langston, she there shows up dressed in nice clothes, wearing make-up, smiling, and nearly can talk normally when he puts questions to her, and her muscles are nearly perfect and as fast as original. So opposite to the previously George and Juanita, she very fast went into recovering back into being normal.

And as a side remark, we know that if we totally don’t a muscle during more than one month and a half, then it start to decrease, and furthermore that after long time the brain can forget the existence of a not used muscle. I personally know concerning my right arm and hand, after an accident 7 years ago. But in her case the muscles were frozen until they were waked up, so to me it could be interesting to know more about this.

On the side 223 we read that in 1994 died the first of the 6 frozen addicts, the Bill Silvey, in the age of 42 years, one of two brothers who both were frozen by the MPTP being in the bad heroin. When his brain then was examined it showed up that the actual part of the brain, the substantia nigra, was almost totally gone, and that nerve cells in the area still continued to die.

As the “The Case of the Frozen Addicts”, the copy which I bought by Amazon, is a reprint of the original from 1995, we in this new one, starting on the side 235, have the “Additional material for 2014 edition”, and beginning on the side 237 with 12 sides containing “What’s New in Parkinson’s Disease Research?”. Last during these 12 sides we read that Palfreman “in 2011 experienced his own dose of irony, by being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease”, as he tells it. And that Langston during 4 years has been dealing with a skin cancer which opposite to normally don’t benign, so in vain after multiple treatments speculating about how it will turn out.

As none of the persons whom I know are hit by Parkinson’s, and only in the news read about persons affected Parkinson’s, I mostly only knew this disease by name, and newer new how severe it actually can be. Of course if we need to learn about Parkinson’s, we now a days can go to Google, but normally it can be more delightful to read a good book like this one, which it was hard to put down after starting reading inn it.

Fascinating medical case of how six heroin addicts helped advance research on Parkinsonism
By Prapaisri Lubin
A great read.

Six heroin addicts who did some "bad dope" (an underground lab's version of a Demerol analogue), and who strangely went into full-blown Parkinson's as a result of getting this batch of street-lab dope. The medical detective work was complex, as was the later research on the use of stem cell implantation on these addicts in Sweden. A tragic incident for these drug users that lead to tremendous knowledge on this disease, the bulk of the work being done by the neurologist who wrote this book.
All of the triumphs and obstacles are on display (including the political maneuvering of the paper-pushing administrators who wanted in on the fame just by being near these efforts), and the sufferings and later relief of the subjects themselves.
A very interesting read, a well-edited and well-written book that was hard to put down.

Love the book!
By Mom Writer
I read the book but it was borrowed via an inter-library loan. I ordered the book a week ago because I went to a talk by the author. Very interesting stuff. This discovery totally revolutionized how Parkinson's disease is being studied. Without the findings documented in this book, there would never have been animal models for drug development and the deep brain stimulation surgery. It is a book that worth reading, many times over.

Intuition: Knowing Beyond Logic, by Osho

Intuition deals with the difference between the intellectual, logical mind and the more encompassing realm of spirit. Logic is how the mind knows reality, intuition is how the spirit experiences reality. Osho's discussion of these matters is wonderfully lucid, occasionally funny, and thoroughly engrossing.

All people have a natural capacity for intuition, but often social conditioning and formal education work against it. People are taught to ignore their instincts rather than to understand and use them as a foundation for individual growth and development-and in the process they undermine the very roots of the innate wisdom that is meant to flower into intuition.

In this volume, Osho pinpoints exactly what intuition is and gives guidelines for how to identify its functioning in others and ourselves. You will learn to distinguish between genuine intuitive insight and the "wishful thinking" that can often lead to mistaken choices and unwanted consequences. Includes many specific exercises and meditations designed to nourish and support each individual's natural intuitive gifts.

OSHO challenges readers to examine and break free of the conditioned belief systems and prejudices that limit their capacity to experience life in all its richness. He has been described by the Sunday Times of London as one of the "1000 Makers of the 20th Century" and by Sunday Mid-Day (India) as one of the ten people-along with Gandhi, Nehru, and Buddha-who have changed the destiny of India. More than a decade after his death in 1990, the influence of his teachings continues to expand, reaching seekers of all ages in virtually every country of the world.

Still grateful for this life-changing book after 5 years
By Amazon Customer
I thought I would mention that it has been over 5 years since I first read this book, since that would likely be relevant to those reading this review. But I know that the transformation I experienced from reading this book, and my gratefulness for it, will be with me forever.

This book was my first introduction to Osho. A freshman in college at the time, I was in the midst of a serious spiritual exploration. I had recently read a number of books from the Conversations With God series, which are amazing, but which were ironically acting as a sort of dogma for me. I went around preaching the lessons from those books (overtly or otherwise) and was totally convinced that I was on the spiritual path that was right for me -- and even, dare I say, that I had at least some of the "answers." But there was something about those books that bothered me -- if having a conversation with God was something we were all supposed to be able to experience, why wasn't I experiencing it, and why didn't I feel the books were helping me to do so (in spite of their insistence that this was possible)?

I had no idea that I had become closed-minded, and that Conversations With God was serving as a religion for me--one that taught love and moved far beyond conventional religion--but a religion that was nonetheless limiting.

This book blew me away. After reading it cover to cover, I realized what truth is really about. Our ideas about what truth is, our prior beliefs, the entirety of what our culture teaches us about spirituality--are all irrelevant if they are not grounded in actual awareness and experience. This "idea" is much harder to grasp than it seems. I don't think anything else at the time could have managed to break me out of my way of thinking. I thought I was open to any and all spiritual ideas. It was only Osho who truly opened my mind, heart, and being. If you organize your life around a set of intellectual beliefs, however uplifting, this book will set you free and put you back in touch with your heart, and your intuition.

One reviewer said she thought this book was awful because she was struggling with her faith, and the book only made her doubts greater. But that is the whole point of Osho--to make you question everything until you are truly free to see the truth for yourself, without all of that so-called "knowledge" from the past clouding your vision.

To be more specific, this book changed my life in part because it made me realize that my real passion is music. So, instead of continuing to move in the direction of a career in web development, where music would have been relegated to just a hobby, I switched my major to a degree that also included music, and now I am enrolled in a masters program in music composition. I will always be grateful for Osho, who I feel pushed me in this direction at a young age, rather than just being another person who sacrificed his dreams for the sake of practical and monetary concerns. Anyone who wants to live their dreams more fully would benefit from reading this book.

More importantly, this book opened me up to the whole world of Osho, which is truly vast--I am sure there is a gem for everyone somewhere in his works. I have to issue a caveat--you should be careful not to read Osho too literally. The important thing is the message.

In spite of (or perhaps because of) being a book about moving beyond the intellect, "Intuition" revolutionized my whole way of thinking. I have come to the point where I don't even believe anything that Osho says unless it rings true in my own experience--and that is really saying something.

We live in a world where people will hate--or even kill--as a result of a belief that is not even authentically their own; one that they learned from a book, or from their religion or culture (atheists are not excluded from this, by the way). I now see the world more clearly than ever before. And on every level, Osho has helped put me in contact with a much deeper wisdom within myself than I had ever known before--my own.

It is for this wisdom that I am truly grateful.

Approaching the Unity Beyond Reason
By Dennis E. Bradford
This is an excellent book. It's a perfect complement to his AWARENESS. There is no one way to express the awareness of a sage. Different sages use different words as pointers to the ineffable. The one wonderful truth cannot be captured verbally or conceptually, but it can be directly experienced as emptiness, intuition, shunyata, nirvana. Intuition starts "when reason is exhausted." Nevertheless, we need words and concepts to point us in the right direction and that's what this book does.

Profound for the modern times and mind!
By J. Bateman
An excellent look into intuition, intelligence and the mind. The duality as discussed by Osho is deep and worthy of diving into --It's a shame there is such a disconnect with the heart of matters and I loved Osho's brilliant example of how that disconnect plays out between a lovely haiku poem and the active, intellectual poetry of Tennyson. Osho drives his point home that we need to seek and lead with the heart through direction rather than mind, which strives for a restricted destination. Wow! Just wow!

Great Help!
By BabsB
This book is exactly what it says it is, an "idea" book. All of the included decorations and activities are easily modified to suit any age child. I especially like how the book is broken up into units, with enough included that you are able to use any combination of the activities.
