About the Author

Cindy Stanfield earned her Ph.D in physiology at the University of California at Davis. She teaches human physiology lecture and laboratory courses and neuroscience at the University of South Alabama (USA), and researches sensory modulation. She received the College of Allied Health Professions Excellence in Service Award in 2003 and the University of South Alabama Excellence in Teaching Awards in 2004. She also serves as the advisor for the health pre-professionals at USA. She is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Pain Society, and the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.

Easily the best

Ignore what your classmates, kaplan, PASS and the professor say - skip the terribly mediocre and incomprehensible Guyton and Berne and Levy and pick Germann up. This is EASILY the best physio book out there. The software package alone will get you through the toughest of concepts. This is one of the best-written textbooks on any subject out there and it makes learning about the human body, with its fantastic images and awesome explanations, fun and memorable.

About the Author
Lyndon Simkin is a Reader at Warwick Business School, University of Warwick, U.K. He received his Ph.D. from Bradford University. His research interests are business planning, target market prioritisation, marketing planning, implementation of effective marketing programmes, promotions management and retail marketing. He is the author of other marketing texts and his long-term consulting clients include Calor, Fujitsu, JCB, Raytheon, Royal & Sun Alliance and many retailers. O. C. Ferrell (Ph.D., Louisiana State University) is University Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at Belmont University. He most recently served nine years as University Distinguished Professor Marketing and Creative Enterprise Scholar at the University of New Mexico. His academic research focuses on ethical decision-making, stakeholder relationships and social responsibility. He is a leading publisher in the area of marketing ethics and stakeholder orientation to achieve marketing performance in organizations. Dr. Ferrell is past president of the Academic Council of the American Marketing Association and chaired the American Marketing Association Ethics Committee twice. Under his leadership, the committee developed the AMA Code of Ethics and the AMA Code of Ethics for Marketing on the Internet. He is Vice President of Publications for the Academy of Marketing Science. He has received the Cutco Vector Distinguished Marketing Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science. Dr. Ferrell is the co-author of 20 books and more than 100 articles. Secrets of the Sabians

The Quran mentions four “Peoples of the Book” which are entitled to “protection” from the true (Muslim) believers: Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians and Sabians. The mysterious Sabians have never been identified, but the Gnostic Mandeans of Iraq (who still exist, but mostly in the Diaspora) successfully convinced the Muslim conquerors that *they* were the group referenced. Another common proposal is that the Sabians were the pagans of Harran or Carrhae, perhaps the last surviving pagan group of the ex-Roman Empire. They supposedly convinced the Muslims to spare them by claiming Hermes Trismegistus as their “monotheist” prophet and, I suppose, the Corpus Hermeticum as their scripture! If so, it's possible that the Hermetic lore which was preserved within traditional Islam comes from the Harranian Sabians.

This little book, “Secrets of Planetary Ritual”, is an excerpt from a much larger work, the Picatrix, regarded as one of the most important works of medieval magic. The Picatrix exist in both Arabic and Latin versions. The critical Latin edition has been translated to English by Christopher Warnock and John Michael Greer (whom we have met before in other contexts). The Picatrix contains several chapters on astrological magic, supposedly derived from the traditions of the Sabians of Harran. “Secrets of Planetary Ritual” contain these particular chapters.

The work isn't particularly interesting for the general reader, being a long-winding rendition of various rituals the purpose of which is to supplicate the planetary deities. Sometimes, the rituals are unintentionally humorous, as when the work declares that supplication of Mars requires beheading a leopard “if you can find one”, or (if you can't?) killing a mouse and eating its liver! It's not immediately clear what's the most difficult thing to do – procure a leopard in Renaissance Italy or eating the liver of a house mouse… The work also contains a short description of an initiation ritual for teenage boys into the cult of Mars. Apart from the Sabians, the Picatrix references magical works attributed to Aristotle.

Both translators believe in the efficacy of magic, indeed both have magick blogs on the web, and they therefore warn their readers not to use the malefic spells contained in the rituals. They also assure us that the magic works even without animal sacrifice, so any stray leopards or mice in your backyard can sleep safely. “Secrets of Planetary Magic” is rounded off by shorter versions of the planetary incantations, prepared by Christopher Warnock. They apparently work just as well as the longer ones!

I bought this mostly because of the Sabian angle, and I admit that I didn't find it particularly interesting. Still, probably worth three stars due to the translation efforts of Warnock and JMG.

About the Author
David Emory Shi is a professor of history and the president emeritus of Furman University. He is the author of several books on American cultural history, including the award-winning The Simple Life: Plain Living and High Thinking in American Culture and Facing Facts: Realism in American Thought and Culture, 1850–1920.

George Brown Tindall spent many years on the faculty of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He was an award-winning historian of the South with a number of major books to his credit, including The Emergence of the New South.

Erik Anderson (San Antonio College, Texas) teaches American history and is involved with the Honors Academy. He also serves as the academic liaison with the Travis Early College High School program at San Antonio College. Anderson earned his doctorate at Brown University

Jonathan Lee (San Antonio College, Texas) served on the American Historical Association/Lumina Tuning Project and educational commissions in the state of Texas to establish discipline-wide historical learning outcomes. He received the “Most Inspirational Professor” award from Phi Theta Kappa Beta Nu. He is the coordinator of the Honors Academy at San Antonio College.

About the Author
Andrew Field MBE is a former British army officer whose travels around the world have given him a unique opportunity to explore battlefields from ancient history to present times. He has always harboured a special fascination for the Napoleonic Wars. In particular he has reassessed Napoleon's campaigns in 1814 and 1815, and has carried out extensive research into Wellington's battles in the Peninsula. He has published articles on these topics and two notable books: Talavera: Wellington's First Victory in Spain and Waterloo: The French Perspective.

British historian Andrew Field, who earlier explored the French perspective to the Battle of Waterloo, now turns his methodical approach to the preliminary Battle of Quatre Bras. His carefully reasoned analysis suggests how and why Napoleon failed to achieve his objectives on 16 June 1815, and how that affected the outcome of 18 June 1815. If this is familiar ground to many readers, Field's perspective is a worthwhile change of pace, with some interesting insights.

In a brisk 200 pages, Fields examines Napoleon's opening moves in the Waterloo campaign and his initial success in wrong-footing his opponents. Blucher elected to fight at Ligny with only three of his four corps. Wellington only just held his ground at Quatre Bras, thanks to just-in-time reinforcements and to a series of painful mistakes on the French side. The nature of those mistakes come back largely to Marshal Ney, a courageous fighter but a man recalled to commanded only hours before the fight and working at cross purposes with his commander. The narrative captures the excitement of a close-fought battle. The text is enhanced by a nice selection of pictures and battle diagrams. The content is accessible to the general reader while having much to appeal to the student of the campaign. Recommended.

Another fantastic book on the Waterloo Campaign!

I immensely enjoyed Andrew Field’s Waterloo: The French Perspective, and the author doesn’t disappoint here. In many ways, the Battle of Quatre Bras set the stage for the Battle of Waterloo itself, and the author presents a comprehensive view of the former engagement. The broader strategic implications for the entire campaign are covered of course, and the author gives a terrific background on Napoleon’s Hundred Days and his grand strategy for the campaign.

A careful analysis of the Allied and French movements / concentration is given, and the author paints a very colorful (and convincing) picture of the timidity of the French commanders, the communications breakdown, and the growing cracks in the French Army’s morale. Some space is devoted to various military tactics of the French Army and how the infantry-cavalry-artillery collaboration was carried out. Saliently, the author devotes a lot of space to the infamous marches and countermarches of D’Erlon corps during the day, and the (hesitant) participation of two divisions from that corps at Ligny (a much-ignored fact!) is analyzed. The book also illustrates just how close Wellington came to being captured, wounded, or killed. Moreover, we learn quite a bit about the key events before the battle – the nature of Wellington’s promises to the Prussians and the alleged meeting between Napoleon and Ney. In short, buy this book!

Andrew Field has filled that hole with two excellent studies of the Battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo, that explain in compelling detail, the operations and tactics of the French during those two key battles of the 1815 campaign.

'This volume, of course, is focused on Quatre Bras, a more or less drawn fight that was conducted by Marshal Ney on June 16th, while Napoleon was busy defeating the Prussians at Ligny. Field makes extensive use of French soldiers’ accounts . He dissects the important decisions of Napoleon, Marshal Ney, and other high-level French officers that shaped the campaign , most notably discussing why d’Erlon’s I Corps wander ed about aimlessly on the 16th, arriving neither at Ligny or Quatre Bras?'
