Superbly written and edited text directed at Diabetes professionals. Now, with many developments in treatment options, somewhat long in the tooth. Much remains excellent. Recommended part of every practicioner's library.

This is a great book, except for that it is out of date. The authors are leaders in their field, and the information in the book is great, but the copyright says 2004. I hope they hurry and update this. There has been a lot of change since this was published. I know these folks are busy, but...

About the Author
Maurizio Calbi is Professor of English Literature at the University of Salerno, Italy. He is the author of Approximate Bodies: Gender and Power in Early Modern Drama and Anatomy and has published on Shakespeare and early modern culture, screen adaptations, postcolonial literature, and postcolonial rewritings of Shakespeare.

An instant classic! The two blurbs say it all

I have little to add to the two super positive and highly informative blurbs by Mark Thornton Burnett and Douglas Lanier except to say that I think this book should be of interest to all Shakespeareans. I will adopt it as a textbook in my courses. I do hope it comes out in paperback. it would be wonderful to teach a course on Shakespeare's media ghosts, using Calbi's book, Kahan's Shakespiritualism: Shakespeare and the Occult, 1850-1950, and Burt and Yates' What's the Worst Thing You Can Do to Shakespeare?? Palgrave is building quite a splendid list.

Clear and concise

This is an excellent book on the analysis of algorithms. More specifically, it is a book on the mathematics needed for the analysis of algorithms. Quite a few algorithms are presented and analyzed in great detail, but the emphasis is on the analysis techniques rather than on the algorithms.
This is in contrast with Cormen,Leiserson and Rivest, or Sedgewick's own "Algorithms" series which emphasize the algorithms rather than the analysis.
If you're looking for a catalog of algorithms along with explanations, you want a different book, but if you want to know how to analyze that bizarre code (which Fred in the next cubicle wrote) and prove that it works well (or doesn't) then this is an excellent choice.
The book is aimed at advanced undergrads/graduate students and assumes a certain amount of mathematical sophistication - i.e. calculus, discrete math, probability, etc.
On the spectrum from "Mathematical Techniques" through "Analysis of Algorithms" and ending up with "Catalog of Algorithms", I would start with Graham, Knuth and Patashnik "Concrete Mathematics", travel through this book, on to Knuth "The Art of Computer Programming", then to Cormen, Leiserson and Rivest, and finally end up with either Sedgewick's "Algorithms" or Skeina's "Algorithm Design Manual".

Classic textbook in this field

For a long time analytic combinatorics lacks a good and comprehensive textbook. Almost every learner in this field learns this subject via scattered papers and chapters in different books or journels. The apprearence of this book is so welcome by learners and researchers that it offers a excellent introduction of this powerful and relatively new field. Flajolet and Sedgewick are the famous masters of this field, and this book proves that again. The writing style is succinct, with instant exercise(s) after every important concept and result. The pace of this book is very natural and self-contained. The first half of this book deals with the basic tools used for analysis of algorithm, from the recurrence, generating function, to asymptotic approx. Then it discusses 2 most crucial subjects: trees and permutations. The last 2 chapter turns to strings and words. I found it very readble that there is a typical and core example in every chapter. BTW, since I still haven't finished studying this book, but I must say that Chapter 5 (Asymptotic) is among many textbooks the best introduction to this hard topic so far.

A very readable chapter on generating functions

I don't know whether the style of this book is good or not but for me the chapter on generating functions was very readable. At the time of reading I already have read several books for the understanding of generating functions; including Graham, Knuth, and Patashnik's "Concrete Mathematics," which is definitely great but difficult to me. I've got a solid understanding of the subject through two books: Polya et al's "Notes on Introductory Combinatorics" and Sedgewick and Flajolet's.

Nature's Best

I found this collection of poetry in the dusty corner of an old bookstore and was pleasantly surprised. Mary Oliver composes her poetry, conjuring nature at its best, both the human aspects of it and those moments of quiet audacity in the natural world that humanity can never touch. She examines how we relate to the animals around us, and in some of her "twelve moons," Oliver asks us to put ourselves in the place of singing frogs and a birthing black bear. At the same time, she recalls the suicide of a friend or her great-aunt which, along with the others, make for poems of ultimately biting truth.

A wonderful short collection

Like the other reviewer, I also found this book at a used book store. I was going through a phase reading a lot of poetry that used nature to explore human themes, and this book was a wonderful fit. The poems are free verse, some more structured than others, and steeped in natural imagery drawn from animals, the woods, water, and of course, the titular moons.

Some of my favorite poems include:

"At Blackwater Pond" which starts out "You know how it feels, / wanting to walk into / the rain and disappear - / wanting to feel your life / brighten and grow weightless / as a leaf in fall."

"Sleeping in the Forest" which starts with "I thought the earth / remembered me, she / took me back so tenderly, arranging / her dark skirts, her pockets / full of lichens and seeds..." and ends with "...By morning / I had vanished at least a dozen times / into something better."

"Beaver Moon - The Suicide of a Friend" which includes the lines "When somewhere life / breaks like a pane of glass" and "...you turn in your bed / to watch the moon rise, and once more / see what a small coin it is / against the darkness...".

I love the simple yet beautiful expression in these poems. Even though most are nominally about an aspect of the natural world, they still speak of human issues - of nostalgia, of the loss of a friend, of family relationships, and of the poet finding herself. I highly recommend this short collection.

About the Author
John T. Warren (Late) was professor of Speech Communication at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. His major research and teaching centered in Communication Pedagogy, Performance Studies, and Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies. He was the author of numerous books including Performing Purity: Whiteness, Pedagogy and the Reconstitution of Power; Casting Gender: Women and Performance in Intercultural Contexts; Critical Communication Pedagogy; and the SAGE Handbook of Communication and Instruction. He also authored articles for several education and communication studies journals, including Educational Theory, Communication Education, and Text and Performance Quarterly.

Deanna L. Fassett is Department Chair and professor of communication pedagogy at San José State University where she has, since 2002, mentored her department’s graduate student instructors. She is the author and editor of three other books: Coordinating the Communication Course: A Guidebook, Critical Communication Pedagogy, The SAGE Handbook of Communication and Instruction, and Communication: A Critical/Cultural Introduction, Second Edition. Her published research has appeared in a broad array of communication studies journals, including Basic Communication Course Annual, Communication Education, Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies, and Text and Performance Quarterly.

It's not for everyone.

The book can be abstract. Annoyingly abstract. It isn't written in a way a traditional textbook is written, so most people will find it difficult at first. We're halfway through finishing it, and my classmates still hate it. Word definitions aren't explicitly stated, so don't expect to just skim through the book to understand the main points. I do like that the chapters aren't long (about 20 pages), and I think it can open your mind. So as someone who cares about social issues and society, this is a good read. But if you get bored easily and aren't interested in communication at all, it won't be enjoyable.

Amazingly Comprehensive

I am a student who just finished taking a university-level communications course that used this book. By far, I have to say this textbook is the best one I have seen, and I plan on buying a copy for my own personal reading collection! It's a must-have. The book touches on race and gender and their roles in culture and communication amazingly well, and acknowledges that there is a lot wrong with our society and picks apart many of these things. To be honest, the book isn't abstract at all and walks you through the concepts one by one without talking down to you or being confusing. If it's abstract to you, that means you're either small-minded or not paying close enough attention. I think this book should be required reading in colleges, and possibly even required reading in high schools (with appropriate supplementary materials.)

The book is basic and sufficiently simple for urban students with limited livestock experience, yet challenging for students who have a livestock production background. KEY FEATURES

Chapters 1-9 cover animal products and give an overview of the livestock and poultry industries, Chapters 10-22 discuss the biological principles, while livestock, poultry, and aquaculture management practices are presented in Chapters 23-38.

The glossary of the terms used throughout the book has been expanded so students can readily become familiar with animal science terminology. The bold-lettered words in the text are included in the glossary.

Many illustrations in the form of photographs and line drawings are used throughout the book to communicate key points and major relationships. If "a picture is worth a thousand words," the numerous photographs and drawings expand the usefulness of the book beyond its pages.

Selected references are provided for each chapter to direct students into greater depth and breadth as they become intrigued with certain topics. Instructors can also use the references to expand their knowledge in current background material. Also included in the selected-references sections are references to visuals that relate to the specific chapter. The book is designed to accommodate several instructional approaches to teaching the introductory course: (1) the life-cycle biological principles approach, including such areas as consumer products, reproduction, breeding, nutrition, and animal health; (2) the species approach (teaching the course primarily in reference to the various species); or (3) a combination of the previous two. The latter appears to be the most popular teaching approach, covering principles in lecture and combining principles and species into laboratory exercises.

Some instructors will assign one or more papers on a topic selected by them or the students. The references at the end of each chapter are designed for students who want or need to explore certain topics in more depth.

Most instructors will not have sufficient time in their courses to assign all the chapters. Course outlines can be developed to include the chapters assigned and put them in the sequence that meets an instructor's preference. CHANGES IN THIS EDITION

This edition has been updated with current technical and applied information. Whenever possible, tables and figures have been revised with current data. A chapter on aquaculture has been added to the text, and major revisions of the careers chapter (37), the species breeding and management chapters (25-36), and the reproduction chapter (10) have been made. This revision provides more detail in terms of selection strategies and tools, management benchmarks, endocrinology, and food safety issues. The emphasis on bioeconomics and global perspectives has been continued. A list of useful Web sites is provided to allow students and faculty the opportunity to explore a variety of information sources that complement the text. The addition of a CD-ROM that provides interactive study questions for each chapter also adds to the value of this edition.

About the Author

Robert E. Taylor was raised on an Idaho livestock operation where several livestock species were produced. He received a B.S. degree in animal husbandry and a Master's degree in animal production from Utah State University. This background, combined with his Ph.D. work in animal breeding and physiology from Oklahoma State University, provided much depth to his knowledge of livestock production. He has had practical production experience with beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, sheep, and swine.

Dr. Taylor received teaching awards at Iowa State University (where he also managed a swine herd) and at Colorado State University. He also received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Society of Animal Science in recognition of his ability to organize and present materials to students. Many of his concepts for effective teaching are used in this book. Dr. Taylor passed away in 1998.

Thomas G. Field was raised on a Colorado cow-calf and seedstock enterprise. He managed a seedstock herd of cattle after completing his B.S. degree. A competitive horseman as a youth, he has had practical experience with seedstock cattle, commercial cow-calf production, stockers, and horses. He has a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in animal science from Colorado State University.

Dr. Field has received teaching awards from the USDA National Excellence in Teaching program, the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, the American Society of Animal Sciences, and Colorado State University. Dr. Field is the teaching coordinator for the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University and is responsible for coordinating the teaching herd.

Scientific Farm Animal Production (9th Edition)

This book is required for my college class on the subject of farm animal production. It is written well enough, but I find it quite biased in favor of factory farm animal production, treating organic food production and small farms as quaint, expensive, and inefficient while lightly touching on the problems associated with CAFOs.

Propaganda at it's finest

True this book has some very basic agricultural knowledge, including chapters on things like eggs, wool, beef, poultry etc - but there are lines in the book that literally churned my stomach. The beef and poultry industries may as well have written this book themselves. My favorite that I came across so far was in the Dairy chapter where it informs you that lactose intolerance can be overcome by consuming more dairy. I'm sorry - but I continued to consume dairy for over 10 years while they tried to figure out what my "mystery illness" was and it ended up being a food allergy to dairy. Being a biology major I love how so much of what is said in this book as random comments seems to NOT be based in scientific fact. I mean sure the diagram of the egg is great, but when there are comments about people overblowing health issues of these foods it leaves me questioning the validity of the rest of the book. If you're already drinking the kool-aid of the various industries then you will be fine with this book - but if you have taken classes like Microbiology or Immunology then you'll be left scratching your head as you try to reconcile the information contained within.
