Grade 2–4—Harry Houdini's life was interesting and full of examples of persistence and dedication to his craft. Unfortunately, not many of them are represented in this brief chapter book. In this story, Ehrich Weiss, the son of a rabbi, attends a small circus and is inspired by the tightrope act. He goes home eager to try it for himself and soon learns the secret. Then he tries another stunt with disastrous results. He loses his front teeth, but learns an important lesson. The book contains a few true facts about Weiss's childhood and mentions his early interest in locks and performing. The writing, though fluent, is a little didactic. Children will see through the thinly veiled preaching about being polite, persistent, and careful. Black-and-white drawings, some full page, appear throughout. A better fictionalized account of Houdini's life is Kathryn Kilby Borland and Helen Ross Speicher's Harry Houdini: Young Magician (Aladdin, 1991). In it, the lessons arise from the story rather than being superimposed on it. It also gives much more factual information about Houdini's life.—Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT

Erich Weiss, more commonly known as Harry Houdini, apparently determined to become a performer as a young child. A Spotlight for Harry presents a fictional version of Houdini's beginnings as an escape artist. In Eric Kimmel's compelling early grade novel, young Harry attends a circus performance with his family, and is immediately spellbound. He and his younger brother Dezso ("Dash") arrange to use a neighbor's barn and rig themselves a tightrope. Through determination and lots of practice they learn to walk it; then Harry is ready to try another trick. After he hurts himself, he learns another valuable lesson about performing - all is not as it appears. Kimmel portrays Rabbi and Mrs. Weiss as warm and fairly easy-going, in contrast to most biographies of Houdini. Young readers will quickly grasp how Harry and Dash apply the lessons of persistence and confidence taught to them by the circus performer they befriend. Some children may be a little confused by the Weiss family speaking German though they are from Hungary. The author's note explains that the story is based on events from Houdini's life. Sources of additional information would have been helpful for readers whose interest is piqued, especially as this terrific book is likely to create lots of interest in the life of the great Harry Houdini. Best QB book...period

I have a son that is a college freshman quarterback and I have researched about every book and training aid there is. This is the best....the key to this book is all the information that the qb doesn't get from most coaches and parents (if he would even listen.) Coach Shea uses examples of famous former students of his that will hit home with your QB. Much information about work ethic, mental toughness, personal skills, etc...traits that will last them their entire life. The book is expensive, hardcover with great pictures, but worth it. Less than a half hour qb lesson and a much greater value. The skills, traits, actions that Coach Shea talks about in Eye's Up could be the difference in your qb's career. I am finishing reading today and overnighting to my son. Wish I would have had this many years ago.

Terry has been training the leading Quarterbacks since 1968, and this book is full of his secrets, his strategy, his life's work. As the cover shows some of his latest successes, he trained Trent Green, Matthew Stafford, Josh Freeman, Sam Bradford, Blaine Gabbert, and so many more and led them on to the top. This books informs about leadership skills, the incredible traits of a great Quarterback and how to get there, communication on the field - even the subliminal kind - and the great value of enthusiasm. How many of these great qualities have been lost during these times? But Terry Shea brings them back and shows your Quarterback how to make them part of his game, and part of his life. There is even a summer workout program! This book should be on the desk of every Quarterback coach in the country, and maybe also on the desk of that Quarterback's dad!

What a mountain of good work!

Carlo Ferroni with the help of John Baker and Lusiano J. Iorizzo has given us a big book in insights into WW II from the Italian perspective. Interviews with 70 Italian POWS provides the book's core and they are handled well, given context and yet kept in their own words. Insights to Mussolini and Fascism go beyond the limits of history books and into the minds and hearts of these men who served in a losing war. It seems a history forgotten and one that could teach us much about war and humanity. Ferroni handles it all with great understanding and narrative skill. I've read most of "Italian POWs Speak Out at Last" in its pre-production form, being the son of the author.
