It is a very interesting journey from the early days when gold was a symbol of power and was used solely as an ornament. Then appears the currency in Lydia and from that moment on gold is consolidating as Money back. But there comes a point in the historical narrative, just in time to enter the modern age, with the creation of the Bank of England, where the story becomes a general history book for economists. It is quite difficult to understand what is explained thereafter by the desire of the author to explain the specifics. But if you make an effort you can get the most important information and understand the milestones in the history of gold and its close relationship with the current economy.

Spy Games is a great book! If you read past the first chapter it may make more sense too. A swashbuckling journalist gets head-deep in an enthralling adventure that will keep you riveted to your chair. Espionage is the M.O. of Brookes and he portrays the sinister underworkings of real life intelligence with stunning astuteness and clarity. This is also a smart thriller, more Le Carre than Vince Flynn, and it is not something to be taken lightly. Spy Games is the real thing.

This is literary espionage at its finest. Brookes even surpasses Olen Steinhauer which I thought impossible---until now. His insights into China's culture and ongoing struggles integrating their past with their future global ambitions are as sobering as they are insightful. If a book can be "thrilling" without being classified as a "thriller", then this is certainly what Brookes has accomplished. Moreover, Brookes reminds me of another favorite, Mick Herron, in his depiction of British intelligence operations with all its internal battles and duplicity. It'll help if you first read Brookes' previous novel, but it's not entirely necessary. But whatever you decide, get started right away---this guy's destined to be the new Le Carre/Steinhauer.

Fabulous book. Brookes uses the first chapter to pull together all the plot threads from Night Heron to pull you into the evolving plot. As with Night Heron, I find his writing evocative and absorbing. Asia can be suffocating in both temperature and expectations and Brookes intimate knowledge of and descriptions of the atmosphere and physicalness of the place are masterful. He has a section where Mangan is secreted under the deck in a boat going down the Mekong that gave me the creeps. Lots of interesting political threads. Love the characters. Peanut makes a brief cameo. Would make a great film. Can't wait for more.

A Fun Story That Also Aids With Learning to Count

This is a pretty cool little picture book. Basically we follow Santa as he drinks or eats many liquids left out for him and whilst so engrossed in the rhyming tale, we don't notice that we're counting along the way. Such as "at number 2, two plates of stew. At number 3, three cups of tea." Each counting page also has a colourful illustration of what is being consumed with the appropriate number of items on the page. When we get to ten we realise Santa is busting quite bad. To make matters worse, he forgot to deliver his presents so we revisit the houses this time counting backwards from ten to one, such as "at number 5, five toys to drive, at number 4 four beasts who roar!' Then Santa boards the sleigh to rush home to the North Pole to pee. Obviously Santa should have just gone behind a tree or something, but this is a kids book and he's got to wait until he's at home in his own bathroom.

A clever book, who hasn't wondered about Santa going to the bathroom while delivering the presents.

What a treat this book is for the Christmas season....whether to add to your own collection or give as gift it will have you laughing all the way....with Santa....to the potty. Yes, poor Santa overindulges on the drinks and the results are quite hysterical. This rhyming counting book will visually track his antics of sips and swallows and lead you to understand his predicament completely. The very worst part is because he is so focused on his liquid entertainment he forgets to leave the presents behind. He hastily beefs up his deliveries at the next homes...why?... because Santa just must get home to wee! After work he hops in his sleigh and heads off for home and for much needed relief. What happens there is very comical. Will Santa make it in time? Will he have that satisfied look of contentment on his face after his bladder is finally emptied? No spoilers here but you will enjoy how his big Wee caused Santa to flee.....get out of his way before it's too late.....it's time NOW!

The illustrations are colourful and Santa's expressions priceless. This book will certainly appeal to the younger kids (boys especially ages 3-4) and have them giggling away because they all love toilet humour. Many children have wondered how Santa manages so many visits in one night but how many have thought about how he copes with all the tasty food and beverages that are left out for him to enjoy? Can we expect a sequel about Santa and his other body functions? I hope so. Now that would be worth checking out wouldn't it?

this increased my faith

This really touched me and increased my faith. I've been struggling with trusting the Lord in a trial I've been going through. After reading this I realized I was feeding my own doubts with the words I used and the thoughts I chose to entertain. Forgive me God! I'm trusting in you now Jesus!

Moving and intense

This book is so many things -- an adventure, a steamy romance, a suspense thriller, a story of love finding a way in an impossible situation, and the journey of two broken people finding the strength to heal each other ... mix in clones, shifters, bad-ass Marines, passionate sex, and a generous dose of humor, and it's a ride you won't forget! perfect.

finally a sequel to laura's wolf and prisoner (it's free right now! check it out), the urban werewolf romance that COULD.

dj is a filippino werewolf marine kidnapped and held on a secret villainous underground base under a threat to his marine buddy, echo is a genetically engineered assassin blackmailed with the life of her deathly ill sister; in the last book they've fell in love, and in this one they're going to take the world on: with a pack of pissed-off made wolves, a playlist made of worst songs ever, a lot of kindness and some creative electrocution.

i loved that since echo and dj was already IN relationship, the author took time, space and care to develop THE relationship. there's a lot of action and shenanigans, ranging from hilarious (oh, this russian ambassador party!) to tragic (echo's everything) to all the things between. there's space for them to talk about childhood experiences and combat trauma and favorite movies and family memories and lack thereof, and touch each other and comfort each other and be there for each other. it's quietly, respectfully, beautifully sweet.

also features: a whole bingo worth of hurt/comfort, long-awaited cameo from laura's wolf, world's most hilarious fictitious romance novel titles charlie reads ('mated to the mongoose' is my personal favorite), and a lot of joy.

satisfying conclusion to the story begun in Prisoner

I was looking forward to the second half of Echo and DJ's story, and it didn't disappoint. I enjoyed the first book (Prisoner, free on Amazon right now), but I liked the second one even better. It's a good romance, but it's also an enjoyable action & intrigue story. The action scenes are as well written as the sex scenes. I also like that the "bad" guys are not too one-dimensional: the author adds just enough depth to their characterizations that you have to acknowledge them as human beings who make bad (sometimes REALLY bad) choices.

The exploration of PTSD and combat stress is fascinating and makes sense in the context of Echo and DJ's story, and allows us to see how their support of each other builds and deepens their relationship. Finally, I have to mention that I LOVE the werewolf mythology the author's built up in these novels. The individual powers each werewolf has are SO fun to read about (though that one power gives me the willies if I think too hard about it. You'll know which one I mean!).

I enjoyed Laura's Wolf, too, which was the first novel published in this series. But I think you can read them in either order: Laura's Wolf first, or Prisoner/Partner first.

This is THE set to get. Amazing shape, and when you can find it like off the shelf new, the only thing missing here was the shrink wrap. This has everything from the little black boxed sets. Great artwork. Elegant yet complex as you want gameplay. Wayne's Book/Games is the only place I never worry about condition or shipping/packing. A++++. Great game, from the BEST when it comes to condition/completeness/prices/quality. Why ever shop from anyone else.
