Lots of gaps - downloads don't match book

Short|Fast|Focused.
With 29 pages of text, it is short.
It is fast. I gave up at page 8.

Problem is that they expect the reader to fill in the gaps.
Rather than give you full source code of each file, they leave that as an "exercise" for the reader.

The sample code in the book is partial code, and doesn't even bother giving you a path/filename.ext.

It may be useful to the author to job his memory, but the rest of us are out of luck.

Well I paid the author, so that he could teach me quickly, not so that I would have the joy of filling in the gaps.
If the author would have added in even 20 pages of complete examples, it would still be a short book of 49 pages.

Save your money.

The only thing this book has for it, is that it is the only RequireJS book on Amazon.
That is not good enough.

An alternative is PluralSight's course 'JavaScript Design Patterns', section 'Asynchronous Module Definitions'. This costs $29/month, but is actually useful as an introduction, unlike this book.

Follow up with the requirejs.org website. This book is that useless.

Complete rip off

Bought the kindle version for $10 and it took less than 15 minutes to read it. The entire book is a bunch of configuration skeletons completely void of any meaning explanation or detail. In fact the authors favorite sentence is "for more detail please see - followed by a reference to someone else's work on github"

Hands down the worst reference I've ever read. Going to try and get a refund from Amazon but I'm probably stuck with it.

Be warned: don't waste your money!

Update; amazon cheerfully refunded my money. They continue to be the best company to deal with EVER!

A solid starting point for intermediate javascript programmers

I have worked with require.js and have done a good amount of R&D into this javascript library. I felt this book was not as thorough as it could have been. Mr. Franko doesn't spend any time covering the concepts behind Asynchronous Module Definition nor does he go into much detail about how require brings AMD to client-side javascript. If you are new to the concept of AMD and large scale client-side builds this book will not be a one stop resource for you.

That said this is an excellent starting point and reference for intermediate js programmers. If you are already familiar with AMD this book is a good introduction to require.js. If you are unfamiliar with a modular workflow you will need to put in extra research to understand what this library is for and how to use it. This book educates by concise examples. It covers everything from your most basic project to integration with your favorite front-end libraries and frameworks. Mr. Franko even introduces you to the require.js command line tool for production packaging of your project (r.js).

You will not "learn something new in an instant" and if you are unfamiliar with modular javascript workflows this book will not save you from having to do your own research (there are excellent articles and videos about AMD javascript on the internet).

If, however, you're an intermediate level javascript programmer looking for a starting point with require.js then this is the book for you. If you are looking to have a handy require.js reference nearby this book will serve you well.

A very good addition to role-playing research literature

The Functions of Role-Playing Games is an expanded public version of the author's PhD thesis, and that definitely shows in the wealth of references and the scope of the work. Practically all of the central themes of current-day role-playing research are there, in one form or another: Character-player relationships, educational games (including simulations), historical connections, definition, role-playing as a kind of ritual, and skill development via play.

This means two things. One, that this is a great place to start on role-playing research, and should actually be mandatory reading for any beginning role-playing scholar. Two, due to the limited space and lack of certain references, the author never dips really deeply into any of the subjects. This is the book's key advantage and disadvantage. On one hand, it's a great base to build upon, leaving space for further research without blocking anything, and a real eye-opener on just how much "role-playing" actually encompasses. On the other hand, with certain resources more (such as Henriksen, Morton and Montola) to draw upon, it would have been way more impressive.

Dr. Bowman has nevertheless definitely written a key reference for the future, possibly the next "Fine" all of us will have to cite from now on. That is highly applaudable. Certain parts of it I found somewhat boring, but I presume that was mostly because I personally did not need those things (e.g. the systems of D&D or Vampire) explained to such great detail, not because of any fault of the author. She does generalize a lot based on her small group of interviewees, but is always careful to report that she is dealing with probabilities or is making assumptions that may be one-sided. The author's assessment of reliabilities regarding her findings seems very, very solid. Her approach to defining role-playing communities seems a bit alien to a Nordic game researcher, given differences in play culture, but that too is just fruitful grounds for further research.

All in all, this is a necessary, broadly based and well-written addition to role-playing research. It's basically a must-read for any scholar in the field, especially those pondering where to start or whether something within it has already been studied to some extent. It nevertheless gets just four stars from me, because I can see how by taking into account a dozen extra references it could have been magnificent instead of just really great.

Excellent read for RP scholars

(Full disclosure: The author is a friend of mine, we discuss subjects from the contents of this book so I thought I'd give it a read to catch up on her theories and have more enlightened discussions)

This book is an excellent, well thought out dive into the minds behind roleplaying games.

It does a great job of explaining the background of the subject to bring uninitiated readers up to speed. I'm not a huge reader of non-fiction, and especially not something this in-depth into something I am a huge participant in (I've been roleplaying nearly my entire life). But I never found this book boring or too dry for my liking.

I came away with a much better understanding of the different things that attract different types of people to roleplaying, rather than just understanding my own stance. And as something of a hobbyist roleplaying scholar, I believe this book is a great addition to my references.

An exploration of identity in role playing games

In this book, the author shares her research and experiences with role playing games and explores how such games can be used to explore different identities. I found this to be an intriguing exploration of role-playing games and how people use them to explore their identities as well as how they are used by society in general for problem solving. The author does an excellent job of showing the breadth of role-playing games, and the various uses they are put to. This is an excellent book to read to understand identity alteration and how the assumption of different roles allows people to explore who they are in relationship to the characters they create and become. The author also provides some useful insights via Jungian theory on archetypes and identity that can be helpful for understanding the psychology of role playing games.

It shows you the formulas in nice boxes throughout the text, but nothing is explained very well and the example problems are next to useless. I'm not sure why I'm writing this because no one would ever buy this of their own free will.

Same as the 3rd edition

Seeing this edition compared to the 3rd edition, there's little to no change. Most problems are the same. I expected clearer explanations in certain sections but no change. Save your money.

This book is not designed for people who are starting to learn statistics or probability. Use this book ONLY if you have undergraduate degree in mathematics or engineering (just like the book says). You NEED to have calculus background in order to understand some portions of the book. There are a number of reasons why I don't personally like this book.
1) Examples cited jump around a lot. There really needs to be a central example library instead of searching through the whole book looking for the example. For example, it would say "Example 38" and talk about how to do a calculation for the chapter but in order to find the data on Example 38, you would have to search another chapter or another part of the book. Why make it so difficult to find the example? Make it easy to access. Don't make me waste my time searching through the whole book, looking for the data on Examples.
2) Index is very poorly designed, if not useless. You have to search for a topic in a number of ways to find anything. It is too limited.
3) Calculations are not fully spelled out. For example, Hayter makes too many assumptions. For example, you cannot skip around to cover different topics because if you do, you wouldn't understand how he obtained the answer. I don't understand why he didn't spell out everything or omits steps and gets right to the answer. To me, process is more important than the answer.
4) Talking about answers, Study Guide is also very useless in my opinion. It only gives you the answer and does not tell you how you get it. What's the use of having the study guide if it doesn't tell you how you got the answer? It was waste of money to buy the study guide.
I believe there are a lot of great books on probability and statistics. In my opinion, this is NOT one of them.
