Great short romance

I really liked this book. When I am in the mood for a shorter story i always go to Presents. This one was a very similar story of poor girl meets prince, but the writing made it very original and very good. The characters where developed well and you could understand their actions and reactions to each situation. Very good developement for a shorter story. Got me laughing and crying but enjoyed the full story. Would read from this reader again.

Holly is a waitress who ends up serving herself to Prince Casper. He thinks she's a gold digger out for publicity and money. Holly becomes pregnant after that one encounter and despite not believing he is the father, Casper marries her. They have hot sexual chemistry, but Casper says he doesn't do love. Holly is a really sweet person who quickly wins over the staff and people of her new country. Will she win over Casper?

I really liked this book. It is sexy, romantic, and fun. I really liked Holly. She's very spunky and doesn't back down from what she wants or thinks. Casper is a royal and has been hurt in the past, but still strives to make Holly happy, despite his misgivings.

I would have liked another chapter or epilogue to tell us how things were when the baby came. I docked one star for this. Other than that, I really enjoyed this book and recommend it!

This book was an entertaining read that occassionally made me smile. The heroine is feisty without being a b#$%*^, and the hero is the typical billionare Italian prince. Holly is likeable because is just too nice to hate, but she stayed with the hero even when she should have shoved her boots heels in his soft tissues and made a break for a life without the perpetual downer (aka Casper).

Casper is a hypersexual Italian male with a libido to rival the entire UK rugby team.

SPOILER: At the beginning of the book, during the first stages of his rather easy seduction of Holly, he asks her if she is using protection. Now, one would assume that since she doesn't have external genitalia, that he is referring to protection from pregnancy. Later on in the book we discover that Casper BELIEVES he is infertile - sterile - shooting blanks...so WHY does he ask Holly is she is using protection?! That's like handing a blind man a blind fold.

Now that I have raised this question, I will summarize my opinion of this book:

It is a quick, fun read, but don't be surprised that when someone asks you if you liked it, all you can do is shrug and say, "Meh".

One of the most intriguing stories of mediumship on record was told by Hamlin Garland, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, in the last of his 52 books, The Mystery of the Buried Crosses, published in 1939. In 1934, shortly after giving a talk on psychic phenomena in Los Angeles, Garland, a very skeptical researcher, received a letter from Gregory Parent, a resident of Redlands, California, telling him of some strange psychic phenomena connected with his wife., Violet. They included some 1,500 crosses and other treasures buried by Indans and unearthed at the direction of her spirit guides as well as spirit photography. Having had many years of experience with mediums, Garland decided to find a medium who might get in touch with the deceased Violet Parent and request her help in finding additional relics, as Gregory Parent had noted that there were, according to the spirits, more to be found. Garland then heard the tune "When you and I were young, Maggie" being whistled and played on a fiddle. If Williams were a fraud, she would have had to know about Uncle David, anticipate Garland's question to him about the tune, and smuggle a fiddle into and out of Garland's home. Many other evidential voices came through Williams, convincing Garland that she was a genuine medium. . Soon after Violet Parent communicated, ,Father Junipero Serra, the pioneering California missionary, and other "Invisibles" communicated. . Under their direction, Garland and Williams traveled hundreds of miles through southern and central California and Mexico searching for more artifacts. The spirits would tell them where to go, where to stop, which direction to walk, and then where to dig. In total they found 16 crosses, similar in substance and design to those collected by the Parents, in 10 widely separated locations. A year after The Mystery of the Buried Crosses was published, Garland died. . By the time of his death he had concluded after 40 years of research strongly suggesting that we do indeed survive physical death.

Mind Boggling

As a long-time student of psychic phenomena, I have a fairly high "boggle threshold." But "The Mystery of the Buried Crosses" exceeded that threshold when I first read the book around 1995. The story was simply too fantastic to be believable. I was inclined to dismiss it as fiction.

A few years later, however, I came upon Garland's 1936 book "Forty Years of Psychic Research" and realized that he was not someone to have been easily duped or to have fabricated such a story. He was a Pulitzer Prize-winning author of 52 books, including the biography of General and President Ulysses S. Grant. A friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, poet Walt Whitman, and author Henry James, he was intimately involved with major literary, social, and artistic movements in American culture. In 1926, the University of Wisconsin awarded him an honorary Doctor of Letters degree. He was later awarded honorary doctorates by Beloit College, Northwestern University and the University of Southern California, the latter's Doheny Memorial Library now housing the Hamlin Garland Collection. The Hamlin Garland Society exists today to disseminate information on Garland's literary works and his early home in West Salem, Wisconsin is a national historic landmark and museum.

Garland's reputation prompted me to reread the story of the buried crosses and more thoroughly examine it. I completed my second read of the book and a subsequent investigation - one in which I contacted persons with knowledge of Garland and the story of the crosses - with the conclusion that there was really something to this story, no matter how fantastic it might seem.

Having read hundreds of books on the paranormal, I rank this as one of the three most intriguing stories I have encountered, the other two being "Psychic Adventures in New York," and the story of Patience Worth, as reported by several authors.
