Dr Emily Splichal, Podiatrist and Human Movement Specialist, is the Founder of the Evidence Based Fitness Academy and Creator of the Barefoot Training Specialist®, Barefoot Rehab Specialist® and BARE® Workout Certifications for health and wellness professionals. With over 13 years in the fitness industry, Dr Splichal has dedicated her medical career towards studying postural alignment and human movement as it relates to foot function and barefoot training. Dr Splichal actively sees patients out of her office in Manhattan, NY with a speciality in sports medicine, biomechanics and forefoot surgery. Dr Splichal takes great pride in approaching all patients through a functional approach with the integration of full biomechanical assessments and movement screens. Dr Splichal is actively involved in the correction of movement dysfunctions as it relates to sports injury and frequently performs manual therapy techniques including joint mobilization and trigger point release. I've been reading Katy Bowman's books, particularly her recent "Whole Body Barefoot". This is a nice, short book that covers much of the same territory. Splichal and Bowman disagree at some points but even though most of the material overlaps they approach the issues of foot anatomy and function form different perspectives so both books are well worth the read. Splichal covers neurology more completely and her exercise section is excellent. I would definitely recommend "Barefoot Strong" particularly if you are having any issues transitioning to a barefoot lifestyle or if you are an older (hopeful) barefooter.

Dr Splichal obviously knows her field. She presents the benefits of barefoot health (aka Movement Longevity) with the zeal of a missionary. She is an entrepreneur building a following. Unfortunately, the presentation in this book is not ready for prime time.
I disagree with an earlier reviewer that this book is suitable for laypeople. As such person, I need pictures and diagrams of foot and body parts to understand what is being discussed; even more so with proposed exercises–the “secrets” promised in the subtitle. There are none in the Kindle version I read.
So, in this age, one puts links in an e-book. That is a good idea; it is a better idea if the links actually work. In this book, they do not. The website one finds via the book links merely promotes the book; it does not display exercises promised in the book.
Perhaps a revised edition will correct these problems. Perhaps someone at the author’s publisher will actually test and correct the website. Perhaps this book will be worth even the modest cost when those problems are addressed. Until then, don't waste your time with this book.

This book is a perfect balance between what a therapist or a layperson may need, not overly laden with clinical data, but plenty of information regarding running shoes, supplementation, or information on exactly what protocols to use to improve your barefoot performance to prepare for overall improvement of your foot to core activation, and overall movement performance. Kudos to Dr. Splichal for a totally useable text. I look forward to your next offering!
