Seems good...but not for me.

This is the first opening book I ever read, and I must say that the lists of variations are overwhelming. Every so often the author includes 'ideas' behind a certain position, but I had trouble referring back to them in the jungle of variation lists. This book seems geared toward the more experienced (1800+) player than to someone looking to amass an opening repretoire. Perhaps I chose the wrong opening to begin with? Hope this helps.

From "Six" to "Eight"

"Eight American Poets," edited by Joel Conarroe, is a fine anthology. The introduction notes that this book was "designed as a companion volume to 'Six American Poets,'" also edited by Conarroe. "Eight" follows the same plan as "Six": rather than anthologize a huge company of poets who are represented by only a few pieces each, each of Conarroe's books focuses on a relatively small group of poets, each of whom is represented by a substantial selection. Conarroe's approach allows the reader to get a fuller feel of each poet in the anthology format.
The poets of "Eight" are Theodore Roethke, Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, John Berryman, Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Allen Ginsburg, and James Merrill. Each poet's work is prefaced by a substantial individual introduction.
There are many masterpieces in this book. Curiously, I found the most compelling poems to be those that focus on nature: Roethke's "The Meadow Mouse," Bishop's "The Fish," Plath's "Mushrooms," and Merrill's "The Octopus." Poems like these combine skillfully used language with keen insight, and reveal these poets to be true heirs of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson (two of the featured artists in "Six American Poets").
Overall, I felt that "Eight" was not as strong as its sister volume, "Six." Although there are many poetic masterpieces in "Eight," there is also much material which, in my opinion, hasn't aged well. The so-called "confessional poetry" of some of these writers strikes me as overwrought. Some of the longer poems failed to resonate with me. I was particularly disappointed by Berryman's "Homage to Mistress Bradstreet," especially since I am an admirer of Anne Bradtreet's own work. Admittedly, this criticism may merely reflect my own personal tastes, but I submit it for the reader's consideration.
The fact that so many of these poets either wrote about each other, or pop up in the editor's introductions to each others' work, sometimes gives the book as a whole a creepy, incestuous feel. And the fact that so many of these poets committed suicide, had long-term mental health problems, and/or suffered from addictions further gives the book as a whole a rather morbid feel. On second thought, maybe this group of eight is a bit problematic!
Still, editor Conarroe has assembled an impressive anthology that I would recommend for students and teachers, as well as to a general readership. Although a mixed bag, "Eight American Poets" contains some truly enduring work by an octet whose legacy is secure.

An excellent introduction to 8 major poets

For someone just coming into an appreciation of poetry-somewhat suspiciously like myself-Conarroe's anthology approach is perfect: concentrate on just a few major poets and provide an introduction to each and a generous sampling of their poetry.

I have owned this book for several years now and it introduced me to what are now some of my favorite poets (Elizabeth Bishop, Theodore Roethke, Anne Sexton, Robert Lowell). It is a book that I go back to time and time again, and I encourage anyone to include it in their collection.

Ah, a fine comparison and contrast in studies on the eight best american confessional poets ever. Kudos to the editor on a fine choice of poems, and candid biographies on each poet. Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Allen Ginsberg, John Berryman, Theodore Roethke, Elizabeth Bishop and the other guy, here's to you.

About the Author

Robert Baldwin is a Professor of Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has published extensively on regulation, has wide consultative experience in regulation and is the Director of the LSE Short Course on Regulation.



Martin Cave is Visiting Professor at Imperial College Business School. He was a member of the U.K. Competition Commission from 1996-2002. He has authored numerous works on economic regulation, and has very extensive experience of advising regulatory agencies, international institutions, and governments.

Martin Lodge is Reader in Political Science and Public Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His research and teaching interests are in the comparative study of Executive Government and Regulation.

I recommend this book

This is a good introduction to regulation and the various views around how it applies and can apply to policy situations. The strength of the book is that it is written by a variety of authors, all knowledgable in their respective fields. A weakness, however, is the flip side of the previous statement: some writers are better at expressing themselves and their ideas than other contributors.

Complex for complexities' sake.

It is hard not to be impressed by the unnecessary complexity of the Oxford Handbook of Regulation. Baldwin, Cave, and Lodge went to impressive lengths to deter the academic reader from finding any enjoyment or intellectual satisfaction in the study of this book. The prose in this book is highly abstract, but contains very little substance. I am not opposed against complexity, but I am opposed against complexity for the complexities' sake - the content covered is by no means rocket science.

Financial Infidelity

"The first time I cheated on my wife we ended up without a kitchen. Hi, my name is Scott, and I have committed financial infidelity." That's the first line in this book, and I didn't put it down until I read the whole thing. The authors are the real deal.

This year you may not be able to increase your salary and benefits, but you can increase your financial acumen. In the long run, that may be one of the best benefits you'll ever receive.

Bethany and Scott Palmer, "The Money Couple," have written a practical and timely guide to help couples with financial communication. Their unique idea: the root cause of money troubles is not a lack of money or budget systems, it is financial infidelity.

Peace of mind before marriage!

My betrothed and I have differing views of money and it really worried me. This is a second marriage for me and a third marriage for him. When I found a recommendation for this book in a magazine article I immediately ordered it. Praise the Lord, my sweetheart and I both read the book and worked through the ending chapters. We will continue to use suggestions from this book. We may never see totally eye-to-eye on money issues, but we can talk about them and understand each other so much better. I am now totally comfortable with marrying this person. Thank you so much for such a helpful book.

About the Author

Marc Brettler is Dora Golding Professor of Biblical Literature and chair of the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University. His main areas of research are religious metaphors and the Bible, biblical historical texts, and women and the Bible. He is the author of several books and co-editor of The Jewish Study Bible.

I have many intros to the Miqra' (Tanak, Bible, Hebrew Bible), and a fair number include the Christian 'Bible'. In fact, there are not enough accessible introductions to our Bible and by Jewish scholars. But here's one, definitely. After seeing it many times at the bookstore, I finally broke down and ordered it (but not at retail!!) from Amazon.

The book is from a modern scholarship point of view considering documentary source theory, etc. (contra, see Umberto Cassuto, Documentary Hypothesis). But it looks at many aspects of each of the books of the Scriptures and I think it gives clear examples to back up his view rather than listing vague notices of instances concerning source theories. Another thing I like is that he refers regularly to the Hebrew text giving both transliteration and pointed Hebrew. (This is important because transliterations are not done well typically and are ambiguous toward the actual Hebrew spelling.)

This would make an excellent introduction to Bible for an individual or college text in a secular or perhaps religious school (yeshiva) class. A note to staff: Don't use books that throw the Christian scripture in with the Bible (Miqra') for intro courses. This is intellectual dishonesty and bias. You would not use a text treating the Hebrew Scriptures and Frank Herbert's Dune books as an intro to Bible; why use one that includes Christian scripture? Judaism and Christianity are not in continuum; they are mutually exclusive. There is nothing in the 'NT' needed to understand Jewish Scripture.

I highly recommend this short introduction to understand Jewish Scripture in its own right. (JPS also has a good intro.)

This is an excellent book without doubt.
However, it must be noted that this book is identical with "How to read the bible" except for the presence of "preface to the paperback edition".

Great introduction to The Tanakh

I have read many review/ analysis of the Bible mainly the Christian Bible but this one is quiet different. The history-critical methods used by the author lets us view the book as a copilation of the lives of the Israelites and how the books we now know as the Tanakh came to be. It is also a great book for anyone who is interested in understanding the differences betweem what the Jews see as the Sacred Writings and what the Christians see as the Old Testament.

My only comment with this book is that it spends a lot of time with the Prophets that might have been better used on the Torah (Pentateuch).
