SHELEMYAHU ZACKS, PhD, is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Binghamton University. He has published several books and more than 170 journal articles on the design and analysis of experiments, statistical control of stochastic processes, statistical decision theory, sequential analysis, reliability, statistical methods in logistics, and sampling from finite populations. A Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, Dr. Zacks is the author of Stage-Wise Adaptive Designs, also published by Wiley.

For a Limited Audience

I think that the vast majority of the people who end up buying this are probably not going to even really be asking whether they should, because it'll be something that was assigned as part of a course. It's very heavy on examples and calculations, which is good for the fact that it provides plenty of practice.

It's at a high enough level, though, that the number of people who'd be studying this kind of thing on their own is very very small. It does seem like it was written with the assumption that there'd be a professor involved who'd probably walk you through some of the gaps. I could definitely also see someone buying it as a supplementary book for a class in the topic, to get a lot more practice questions in case you're struggling and want to make sure you have the subject really nailed down.

If you're just looking for something to teach you about statistics, on the other hand, this is not what you're looking for. When I looked at the description initially I was thinking it meant something more at an undergrad level, but this is definitely intended to be somewhere around advanced undergrad to grad school.

Good High Level Review of Math Stats with Emphasis on Examples and Problems

I liked this book a lot in that it lays out what would be covered in a year-long graduate mathematical statistics course over about 600 pages and 9 chapters, and covers most basic results that one would see in this type of course. What I likes a lot about the book is that after laying out theory (probably about 1/2 of the test), each chapter than has worked out examples, along with problems to which solutions are presented. This is not an easy book and certainly requires good mathematical and statistical training. It could certainly be used as a text; the examples and problems are well chosen and solutions are well presented. For me (a PhD in economics), the book is a good reference as I read statistical work (index is good) - I find looking at a problem (and solution) as a useful way to make sure I understand the material. and problems are useful to make sure I understand the material.

A very good book, but necessarily pretty difficult going given its content. Recommended as a reference and possible text (or study companion).

Excellent Textbook for Advanced Mathematical Statistics Course

This book is a textbook that is geared toward use in upper-level courses in advanced mathematical statistics. It covers basic probability theory, statistical distributions, sufficient statistics and the information in samples, testing statistical hypotheses, statistical estimation, confidence and tolerance intervals, large sample theory for estimation and testing, Bayesian analysis in testing and estimation, and advanced topics in estimation theory.

The description on the cover indicates that this book “[p]rovides the necessary skills to solve problems in mathematical statistics” and that it is a “clear … approach to the fundamentals of statistical theory.” This led me initially to think that it was an entry-level treatise on practical aspects of statistics that would help me in my research and evaluation work.

In over 600 pages of complicated equations and higher level mathematics, the author provides proofs and examples of numerous statistical theories. A highly skilled and adept mathematician would undoubtedly find the information of great interest in strengthening their knowledge of mathematical statistics.

The author is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Binghamton (New York) University. His accomplishments in the fields of statistics and probability are numerous, including several books and over 170 journal articles on the design and analysis of experiments. As such, he is clearly a foremost expert in the field.

At over $100, the book is not inexpensive, and the average statistics user is unlikely to find much of practical application therein. A more basic approach would be Methods of Mathematics Applied to Calculus, Probability, and Statistics (Dover Books on Mathematics) by R. W. Hamming. Although Hamming’s work currently appears in a 1985 edition, readers have consistently given it high marks for its clarity and utility, and as of this writing it is still available from Amazon.

I suspect that Zacks’s book will reach only a very limited audience, primarily very accomplished mathematicians. It is definitely not basic or fundamental, except in the most restricted senses of these terms.

In this book, Blackie Dammett names every single person he's ever met, ever. Clearly he's never met an editor. The book is filled with rambling, corny prose; page-long paragraphs with six different subjects; and a complete display of narcissism. Every time he refers to his son's band, it's "we..." -- as in "we made a video for this song... we appeared on the MTV awards... we released this record... we hired this guitarist." Ugh. Piggyback much? The most sickening thing about the book was his self-congratulatory stories about sleeping with young girls -- a rambling story about a long intimate relationship he has with a girl ends with something to the effect of "...and then we celebrated her 18th birthday..." Drew Barrymore was 14 when he (in his 40s by that time) implies that he slept with her. He more than once claims that Anthony takes after his "pops" in liking the young girls. It's gross, and when it's written by a man who is now in his late 60s, even more so. I guess it doesn't matter that I didn't care for Blackie Dammett; he likes himself enough for both of us.

Found out family secrets!

Blackie definitely has a flair for the dramatic, and it kept me up late last night reading the early years! Full disclosure...we are cousins and his mother was my Aunt Mollie (my dad's sister). I learned a lot about his take on growing up, as I did, in the flatlands of Michigan, and the dream of going to California, but oh what a ride he had! I like his quick descriptive style of writing and loved the action backed narrative. Readers will not be disappointed, even if they do not know who he is talking about, as I did. Great job, Blackie...you inspire me to continue working on my own story!

Just one man's opinion but this guy is a total ass. He thinks so highly of himself it really is laughable. If you think there is going to be some details about Anthony and Flea you are going to be sorely disappointed. This book is about every audition Blackie went on and every and I mean every girl he ever met. This is a cheesy tribute to one man's quest for taking your money. He got some of mine, don't let him get some of yours.

Math section won't help you

The math on the test is now totally different than the classic Algebra, Geometry, etc.and is NOT what is in this prep book. This book will not help you with the math on the test. Order a more updated edition.

About the Author

Dan Stefanica has been the Director of the Baruch MFE Program since its inception in 2002, and is the author of the best-selling A Primer For The Mathematics Of Financial Engineering and A Linear Algebra Primer for Financial Engineering: Covariance Matrices, Eigenvectors, OLS, and more, and co-author of 150 Most Frequently Asked Questions on Quant Interviews. He teaches graduate courses on numerical methods for financial engineering, as well as pre-program courses on advanced calculus and numerical linear algebra with financial applications. His research spans numerical analysis, graph theory, and geophysical fluid dynamics. He has a PhD in mathematics from New York University and taught previously at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Great book for any student

First, primer means you have to have the fundamental math out of the way before you dive into this book. If you are fuzzy about what integration means, or the basic form of differentation then start with Calculus first. Though I think the author does a great job of teaching Calculus in this book.

This book bridges a very important gap between math and finance, and that is from the pure theoretical math to applied finance. People do not realize that financial engineering employs some of the most advanced theories in both theoretical math and probility. Which is why Wall Street is looking for physicists and engineering students for quantative finance.

This is a great self study, or textbook which instructs the student how to apply their math background to finance. The author does an excellent job of teaching the math, while using financial engineering as the examples and problems. Which in the end takes you from basic Calculus to Taylor series and Lagrange.

Actually it would be a great way to teach calculus in the future. Instead of using theoretical physics and the sciences for examples and problems, simply use finance.

The psuedocode is just a bonus in my mind. This is an excellent math book for students, even if they are not planning on a future in financial engineering because it does illustrate applied math like no other textbook.

Comprehensive primer

I read the first couple of chapters a couple of times to get my head around the math I haven't used for a while. It's a little easier together with Mathematica and another head-hurting book "Computational Financial Mathematics using Mathematica." It still hurts, but it's a good hurt.

A Unique Blend of Finance Concepts and Mathematical Foundation: A Must Read for Students contemplating an MFE Degree

Are you contemplating an MFE and/or MS in Math/Computational Finance Degree and asking yourself whether you have the right background?

I strongly believe that "A Primer for the Mathematics of Financial Engineering" by Prof. Dan Stefanica will take you through every step toward finding the Best answer. It will also help you start your journey as an MFE student with utmost confidence. This book is a must for all prospective students for an MFE (or equivalent) degree.

What I like the most about this book is the way the chapters are structured. Every chapter consists of two main parts. The first part deals with the basic mathematical foundation and/or numerical techniques required to understand a given subtopic of quantitative finance. Once the mathematical/numerical basis is set up, Prof. Stefanica moves on to describing how it can be applied to comprehend a specific set of topics in quantitative finance in the second part of each chapter.

Even if your math is not super strong to begin with, or you have not had much exposure to numerical techniques, you can easily master your skills while you are studying the first part of every chapter. And immediately following that, you see the application of the abstract mathematical concepts in the finance world. And then you can sharpen your skills much further by actually solving the stimulating questions/problems found at the end of each chapter.

Another thing I love about this book is the set of pseudo-codes. After describing the numerical techniques, be it Simpson's rules for numerical integration or Secant method for solving 1-D nonlinear problems, the author provides pseudo-codes showing practical examples of their implementation. You can easily translate these pseudo-codes to your favorite language (C++, Matlab, etc.) and start producing results immediately.

I hope you will enjoy studying the topics presented in this book... like I did.

Since she started writing for Blushing Books a year ago, I think Emily Tilton has rapidly risen to becoming one of their star authors. This continues her winning streak, combining elements of her earlier genres (ageplay, what I guess could be called ‘schoolplay,’ and Victoriana) while taking them all into a new direction.

Rachel, Frederica, and Lara are girls whose parents discovered each of them indulging in various minor sexual ‘offenses.’ Scandalized, they send their daughters to the Sunset Harbor School for Naughty Girls, a Caribbean boarding school run by the severe Dr. Martin Scott, who assures them that he can help cure their daughters of their immoral desires.

Unbeknownst to them, Dr. Scott’s school is aimed at doing anything but, using it as a front to ‘recruit’ girls who have the budding sexual temperaments to be educated in the ways of modern ‘women of pleasure.’ Alongside Ms. Lomond the duenna and Mr. George the janitor, Dr. Scott educates them in works of classical erotica while also introducing stern disciplinary measures, leading to their introduction to the world of proper sexual relations – oral, vaginal, anal, and even Sapphism at the hands of Ms. Lomond – all with the aim of presenting the girls at a unique end-of-year ‘coming out ball’ for the powerful members of the school’s local community.

This setting allows Emily Tilton to work with the sorts of the themes that not only interest her the most, but clearly give her the most inspiration as well. In addition, this work involves several new themes for her, including interracial, enemas, and ATM. The nature of the Sunset Harbor school would make it possible to do another work in the setting, and the surrounding community is only lightly explored as well. I therefore hope that Ms. Tilton will feel inspired to continue to develop this new creation of hers.

A Provocative Schoolgirl Cover Touts A Book That Delivers!

How many times have you bought a book with a provocative cover only to be disappointed at the execution of the plot? I mean, the cover does not match the book.
Fear not, The Sunset Harbor School for Naughty Girls by Emily Tilton. It seems the parents have been duped and sent their cute naughty darlings to a seaside villa that from the outside looks common with its neighbors yet inside school is going on with a lesson plan that makes the plaid skirted schoolgirls blush.

Soon the schoolgirls are astounded to find out that along with their academics they would provide guest services of the sexual kind. Some rebelled and had their behinds beat which quickly changed their minds to participate in the lascivious events. Here is a place where paddles and other spanking implements are not spared and the study of the Three R’s is supplemented with rectal thermometers placed in rectums and even anal sex. all tastefully done. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it a cut above what tripe sometimes makes up schoolgirl scene books.

This book is blatantly pure fantasy, combined with pure erotica - and it's HOT! A wonderful concept: an exclusive training facility for beautiful young women who already exhibit an 'aptitude' for bdsm and their own sexuality.

As a result, there are all manner of delicious scenarios to choose from, including M/f, F/f and plenty of menage, with the additional flavours of interracial and humiliation.

If you like the idea of gorgeous, fresh-faced (legal aged) schoolgirls being corrupted in almost every way imaginable, I would highly recommend this book, and the opportunities the girls are given at the end of term is a nice HEA of sorts.

This is my first by Emily Tilton and I will now definitely be on the lookout for more!

Many things missing here. And very few could benefit from it.

David Bean came up with the idea of selling the Euro contract at 5 PM open of futures trading, 24-tick stoploss from entry, close open position at 11 PM. The only explanation given relates to convenience of evening trading for those in the U.S. who work during the day. (Note: with an unmentioned improvement you could leave it running unattended and be watching TV and have a sound notify you when you're either stopped out or it's closing time ... but alerts or placing symbols on the chart would require additional programming you'd have to do yourself.)

There is no mention of why the Euro was chosen. The author requires you BUY his 2007 article that hopefully explains the theory. He says he can't include the article itself, for copyright reasons; but he surely could summarize the basis for this simplistic trading strategy in a paragraph. The .EL code fragments for even the most complex tweaked strategies take less than half a page of text so no need to buy them from author's website (where he says the needed "GET TIME" coding is provided); he rightly suggests you're better off typing it in (and of course finding the TIME function yourself) because then you might understand how it all works and then how you might try to improve on it (like maybe use a different currency, different class of instrument, or different times).

The code fragments provided are not "plug and play" even if you have name-brand Tradestation (R) because Mr. Bean does not include the EL function call that would get the correct times no matter what time zone you are in. Changing the book's "EC" to "6E" is the least of the needed effort to create a working strategy. (If you use a platform that claims "compatibilty" with EasyLanguage, good luck with that.) If you email Sunny Harris she'll probably tell you how to code in the right time even if you haven't yet bought her books.

Many observers have noted the tendency of markets to either reverse or accelerate at certain times of day as trading "rotates" around the globe during each trading week. But, as Mr. Bean notes here, trading U.S. evening time is usually thin. Therefore, the best average profits of ~5+ or 8+ ticks (from winners and losers combined in two provided tweaks of strategy #1) might easily be eaten up, or overwhelmed, by the bid/ask spread plus all the Tradestation (R) costs, latter one of the most expensive trading platforms in wide use.

Paraphrasing Magee & Edwards (1948): The entire basis of technical analysis is the axiom that past behavior can be used to deduce likely future. But Mr. Bean here doesn't care if the Euro was whipsawing up or down 5% or it was flat all day long in the prior trading day. The stochastic tweak looks at just one bar. That's not technical analysis per se; time is a fundamental, not a technical, in brief. By having a strategy that acts the same regardless of what the Euro did in the prior trading day, he is requiring anyone interested in the concept to do a lot of back-testing of alternative currencies, minimum. Maybe that's mentioned in the 2007 article. The most obvious question is this: Why did he choose the Euro and not the Yen? That question is very important because 5 PM is exactly when trading in Tokyo opens, with Europe sleeping. That "secret" is not revealed ... you have to buy his article to find out if it was even considered.

I read the entire book in less time than it took to arrange the return and drop it off with UPS. The reviewer who wrote that this book is giving away some kind of valuable secret is eerily similar in tone to the strong hyping voice of the author. Secret, shmecret. Baloney! It's a pump and dump. As Bean says at least five times in the book itself, this idea is no secret because it was published four years ago in 2007.

The author mentions Python and Euro Surge as proprietary trading systems sold by his company. They are other systems he wrote which also auto-trade the Euro future, albeit during NYSE hours. It would be nice to know how the returns from this public-domain "one-time $35 DIY Euro system" compare to Mr. Bean's proprietary Euro strategies that used to cost me $25/month in licensing fees to auto-trade at OpenECry. If you have this book, the comparative returns (in apples-to-apples form) can be found for free by looking them up as if you were considering subscribing to their proprietary auto-trading systems: Python, Euro Surge, etc.

P.S. I admit to being angry over the unmerited hype when first writing this review yesterday. After sleeping on it I see value here for people who would like to build their own automated trading strategy. There are very few useful books on this niche subject where the audience would be novice programmers of trading systems. This book does a good job of explaining the evolution of a trading system to improve returns. Simply put, this book would be an excellent resource for filling the huge gap between, say, New Trading Systems and Methods (Wiley Trading) and TradeStation Made Easy!: Using EasyLanguage to Build Profits with the World's Most Popular Trading Software (Wiley Trading). If you are unfamiliar with those other books, you might as well take a pass on this one.

Trading the Euro

I bought this book as a way to diversify away from the US markets, and was
pleasantly surprised by the quality of the content that was offered. The
beauty of the book is the education on how to build FOREX trading systems,
but the value is in the open fully disclosed TradeStation code.

The book walks you through several iterations of failures and successes with
regard to system design, rule isolation, and time diversity of systems
building ultimately leading up to winning systems.
The systems are simple to understand, based upon common sense
principals that give you the confidence needed to trade the systems. The
systems are very tradable in their raw form, but I chose to add some minor
enhancements based upon my personal trading style.

I am a day trader, and run these systems on a fully automated basis off a
virtual private server. On a personal note David is very helpful in
answering questions or bouncing ideas off of to improve the personalization
of the system, if you so choose. I highly recommend the purchase of this
book, as the cost is nominal compared to the value of the trading systems
provided.
