La versión en inglés de este libro me pareció muy buena. Incluye numerosas sugerencias, buenas prácticas y ejemplo de personas exitosas que usan y usaron metodologías que se sugieren en el libro. Personalmente es uno de mis libros de referencia, lo pondría entre los 10 libros claves a leer si uno quiere tener éxito en la vida.

Compré la versión en español para regalar, pero desconozco si la traducción es una reproducción fiel del original.

Thuri Calafia (Portland, OR) is an ordained Wiccan minister and High Priestess who has been teaching the Wiccan path for over thirty years. The founder of the Circles system and the Circles School of Witchcraft and Wicca, she is actively involved in her local community and teaches workshops, presents public rituals, and provides intuitive readings.

Contains Some Good Ideas

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, other than that it is supposed to be about your training/progress as an "Initiate." This book follows in the wake of "Dedicant." I have also read the "Dedicant" book in conjunction with this one, and found this book was a tad better than that one.

"Initiate-A Witch's Circle of Water" contains lesson plans, one with 13 lessons based on the moons and one that is solar based that centers around the Wiccan Sabbats. You are meant to work both of them together, which the author warns means spending a fair bit of time and effort over the course of a year.

The lesson plans included are pretty detailed and include reading of suggested materials, journaling, doing trance and energy work, writing rituals, working with at least 2 divination techniques, and so on. This can be especially useful if you are a solitary practitioner who needs a framework to pursue your own path of study and experience. This book can give you a starting point and example for how to build your own lesson plan.

The biggest problem with this is that the author implies that, if you do this, you would be considered the equivalent of a "First Degree" or "Initiate" if you then decide to join a magic group or coven. Most magic groups or covens already have their own lesson plans and requirements to become an Initiate or First Degree in their group or line. It might not come off so well if you meet them and try to insist that you are an Initiate or First Degree and then, when they ask you with what group or line, you tell them you did the work out of a book, no matter how useful a book.

Instead, it might be better to think of doing this work as a "leg up," so that, when or if you consider approaching a group or coven, you can tell them what WORK you have done so that it can lend itself to your training for an intiation there, if that ends up being what both parties want. The material in this book is pretty general--most groups appreciate experience in trancework, divination, and ritual--but there are many kinds of Wicca and covens out there and some have their own particular focus that they would want to impart before considering initiating you. So it might be best to take that statement about this work making you a First Degree with a big grain of salt...

The book also does address many other useful topics, including the importance of taking care of yourself healthwise, working on your internal issues so that they don't block you in your path, and maintaining a good support network. It includes some personal examples by the author of where she did things right and where she made mistakes.

The only other major quibble is the style of writing. The language sometimes is pretty cutesy. She uses vernacular like "oy" and "wuuh" and, the most grating of all, she addresses the reader by the term "dear initiate" and even "my darlings" way way too often. I would have preferred a more grown-up and serious style of writing, especially if the reader is meant to take this as a serious and in-depth course of study (one hopes that the next two books aimed to be about "adept" and "master" work drop the cutsey tone and words).

The author sometimes also makes snarky comments about some Wiccan practices--particularly those of some traditional Wiccan lines--and discounts those that she can't find a use for or couldn't figure out why they are done or, what is more annoying, uses these practices (or rumors about these kinds of practices) to indicate that some Wiccan groups take advantage of people because the priests and priestesses need some way of having power over others or to bolster up their own egos. Of course, there are people like that out there, but that's no reason to diss an entire practice or technique, simply because some people are bad teachers or are secretly (or not so secretly) using the Craft to further their own personal ends. People like that exist in every religion.

Overall, not a great book by any means, but it contains some useful ideas and can serve as a way to see how someone has set up a lesson plan for those who are not interested in working in a training group setting or who just haven't found the right group yet. You just have to try to ignore the author's own bias here and there and try not to wince the next time you are called "dear" or "darling."

Three stars for the useful lessons and examples. If based solely on the writing, I'd give it just two stars. Not a book I'd give to someone already in training in a group.

This is a great book. Really helps you to work on your shadow self. A book you can really do solitare or in a group. Alot of intense reading. I loved Thuri's book The Dedicant and am looking forward to all of her future books.

Reading this book, you get the feeling that you are sitting with a friend, sipping a cup of coffee, and talking about your path to success--a friend who is knowledgeable and genuinely cares. I read the book in one sitting and took copious notes. Brogan makes an important point at the outset: most people tend to think that "freaks" (those who march to the beat of their own drum) are generally young, but as the author points out, as they age, a lot of people grow comfortable with who they are and are not interested in "fitting in." So why wait to be old to do what you want to do? Why indeed! This book may well be a kick in the pants to get you started.

Brogan gives valuable, actionable advice for seasoned and budding entrepreneurs alike, including soloproneurs, small business owners, as well as employeeproneurs. Check out the 6 steps for building discipline, 10 things to quit, garbage and gold questions, and lists of awesomeness (or helpfulness) to name a few. I also appreciated that the advice is in short chapters, with bite sized nuggets, and bolded headings which makes it so much easier to read a book without having to wade through reams of detail. "Brevity is [indeed] the gold standard in business" as Brogan says.

I loved the concept of Monchu, an Okinawan word meaning one family, "the family you choose." Brogan explains how this is better than just networking; this is a list of people you care about. Monchu is the extended network you nurture. The mind-set of Monchu is that you care more about some people than as merely customers or a part of your network. It's the idea that you're not just looking to make money and "sell and run" but that you might want to build a community beyond just selling. If this book inspires you to work from a Monchu mind-set, you will be richer for reading it. Not to mention all of the other useful advice.

Welcome by fellow weirdos and freaks

I am a Chris Brogan fan. His daily writing seems to talk directly to me. In his new book, "The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth", he writes a manifesto of entrepreneurship for the rest of us. It includes:

Admit you are a freak. Do business on your terms. Follow your passion.
Define success for yourself.For me, it's being able to support my family at something I love doing.
Learn a new skill. Take joy in improving your weaknesses.
Have a disciplined routine to be productive. This is necessary in always on, 24/7 culture.
Fall in love with not knowing. This is what having your own business is definitely all about.
Look forward to obstacles. There is satisfaction in overcoming them.

As I read through the book, I kept saying, yes and yes. Chris knows who you are and knows how to help!

This is the Missing Link

I've read my fair share of business books over the past few months, but this one stands out: it isn't the same old song-and-dance. It doesn't simply repeat the "just be authentic, be yourself" advice that can be fairly easily found many places now. Nor does it just give you the nuts-and-bolts to making a business happen and extol the benefits of, for example, choosing yourself or starting your own online business.

Brogan's key insight is to link the two discussions. Choosing to do business on your own terms is an integral part of being a "freak" and owning it. The two shift together, and choices made on one axis affect the other.

Brogan's second key insight--which I dearly wish more folks would talk about as systematically--is that "business is about belonging."

This insight has revolutionized the way I think about doing business. It used to be a slightly sordid thing that would need to exist as a necessary evil. But in making his statement and working through the implications, he persuaded me that there is much more to business than just the gross.

And that observation makes all the difference in the world. If larger corporations (I'm looking at you, U_____ Airlines and U_____ P_____ Service) actually paid attention and began to focus on their customer as the foundation, I don't think commerce (air travel, overnight delivery) would ever be the same. If smaller businesses began to pay attention to this principle, though, the world would be a manifestly better place.

And what better compliment can be paid to a book than to say that the world would be a better place if more people would read it and act on the thoughts in it?

Example pages from the book

Our toddler loves going through this book. Perhaps the best way to describe it is to show a few pages selected at random, here are 4 photos. This book is excellent for any kid from ages 2 to 15. The writing is simple, but introduces enough advanced terms that it will expand the vocabulary even for someone of high school age. Kids love the way this book is organized like a reference encyclopaedia with a twist of variety in the layout every few pages.

My oldest daughter is getting more and more into animals. Not that long ago, I got her a big photo book all about wolves, that had lots of information on the species, and full page photos showing them in their natural habitats. Now and then she'll come home from school with a small National Geographic book that has some good info on a couple of animals, but is usually focusing on something, like stealthy animals. This Animal Planet visual encyclopedia covers just about any animal any kid could think of, and is full of beautiful photographs and good tidbits of information.

Let me just flip to 3 random pages and summarize what's on them to give you a good idea of what I learned:

-both male and female caribou have antlers, and the females shed theirs after having babies
-their calves join the herd right after birth
they cover over 1600 miles when they do their summer migration and head back south when snow falls

-the wandering albatross has the largest wingspan of any other bird (up to 11 feet!)
-the wandering albatross also only returns to land to mate
-the Australian pelican looks really stupid

-Atlas moths, one of the largest species of moth, only live for a week after emerging from their cocoons because they don't have a mouth (that sucks)
-the ornate moth has wings that, when closed, look like a blanket with a cool pattern

Also included in the book is a nice poster full of more animal facts and pictures.

It's crazy how inexpensive this book is considering all the animals covered in it. This dwarfs any kind of animal book my school library had when I was a kid, and if I was a grade schooler now and saw this on the shelf, it'd blow my mind.

The reference book is organized by animal kingdom. Within each category, a few pages introduce the animal type followed by an examination of small groups of animals and close-ups featuring specific examples. ....The proper study of black history will reveal movements that parallel those of today. Black nationalism in particulr was as integral to thought in the middle of the nineteenth century as it is now.

We must begin to study the ideas of the blacks who have been consciously omitted from the historical record. Their approaches to the struggle must no longer be neglected. It makes absolutely no sense to have ten or fifteen biographies of Frederick Douglass and other black figures and not one definitive work on individuals such as Charles Langston, Frances Ellen Watkins, Sam R. Ward, Alexander Crummell, Robert Campbell, Bishop Holly, J. W. Loguen, Mammy Pleasant, the blacks who fought with John Brown, the slave rebels, and the national emigration conventions. No one would detract from the contributions of Douglass or anyone else; however, others have enriched the ideology of black struggle.

Rev. Henry Highland Garnet opened a new chapter in the black liberation movement whae he said in 1843, "Let your motto be resistance." This was the real sentiment of the black masses. Like many others who have been overlooked, Garnet was an inspirational leader in the anti-slavery movement, but he also consistently took progressive stands on vital issues from free labor to anti-imperialism."

Little Star is "Big" in the Eyes of Jesus!

The story of Christmas has been told so many times. We have heard it. We all know it. We sing of it for weeks each year. It is beautiful just the way it is. It seems to say everything.

Every now and then, however, someone comes along with a bright imagination, who can add a twist that seems to bring out an untold aspect or unseen beauty of the story. It doesn't need to be real. We all learn from myths because they can express the truth about something that leaves us with new meaning and gives us a way to teach values in a powerful and special way.

That's what Anthony DeStefano has done for us in this latest of Children's Books. It is very enjoyable book. It contains a very nice Christmas story for young children. It also presents a value that they can understand and that we want them to learn as part of living. The story and message is one which I think children will think about, one which they will remember, and one which they can try out living in their lives. They can learn, even at an early age, the fulfillment they can experience in loving Jesus and in making real sacrifices to love Him and others.

We have had our Deacons (as Santa Claus) read this to our children two years in a row at our Christmas Children's Masses. It was received well because it was directed specifically to these young people (although all the parents thoroughly cherished it). We also used another of his books on Palm Sunday, The Donkey That No One Could Ride.

It's well done, illustrates the book, and captures the flavor of it well. It kind of gives you a chance to try it on before buying! Every Christian child should have this book !!!

This is a lovely book for children which sends a message about giving of self for a purpose... and justifies the decision to use
stars on the top of Christmas trees instead of other bits and bobs. Even the youngest child would enjoy the story, and
it adds to the festivity of trimming the Christmas tree. This book is a keeper. Adults will have something to think about.
