The final chapters detail the mechanics of starting and running a T.D. program: identifying needs, establishing procedures, and much much more. ``A retired secretary types poetry written by a neighbor with multiple sclerosis, and the neighbor repays her by reading the newspaper to the secretary's blind daughter. Elsewhere, a retired teacher tutors a 12-year-old boy in English and he mows her lawn periodically.'' Those are just two of the many ways in which Cahn, an attorney, and Rowe, a writer for The Christian Science Monitor, envision ``Time Dollars''--units of service-oriented barter currency--working to foster mutual aid within communities. The Time Dollars program, which the authors see as a complement to, and not competitor with, the money-powered general economy, is already in place in various communities and organizations in San Antonio, Florida, Hawaii, and elsewhere. Elegantly simple in conception-- help others with, say, two hours of service and you've got two Time Dollars that you can spend for two hours of service by others for you--the program, the authors believe, has the potential to significantly improve many Americans' lives. Strong arguments to back up this belief (e.g., that Time Dollars allow the elderly to contribute to society) are included here, as well as provocative proposals for specific Time Dollar applications (e.g., as a student-aid/loan forgiveness program), and, thankfully, clear and detailed instructions on how to set up a Time Dollar program in your organization or community. Timebanks are alive and well

The concepts that Edgar Cahn developed in this book have continued to evolve in the years since this was written. Hundreds of communities across the USA (and thousands more around the world) now have functioning timebanks where members can trade their time and talents.

Several major foundations have helped fund develop of how-to manuals and timesharing software, available at low cost. Timebanks are a great way to build community and bring neighbors together. Learn more at Timebanks.org.

There are also a lot of great videos on Youtube, produced by timebank members. (Simply search for "timebank" or "time exchange."

About the Author
S. R. Nagpaul was visiting Professor of Mathematics at Ohio University 1983-1984 and 1999-2004. He was formerly Head of the Department of Mathematics at St. Stephen's College, Delhi. Dr. Nagpaul received his Ph.D. from Harvard University under G. Birkhoff. He is a coauthor of two other texts: BASIC ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, Cambridge University Press, and LINEAR ALGEBRA, New Age Publisher. His special interest is in Discrete Mathematics.

S. K. Jain is a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Ohio University. He is also the Director of the Center of Ring Theory and its Applications. Before joining the faculty at Ohio University, he was a Reader in Mathematics at the University of Delhi (1965-70). Dr. Jain has held visiting professor appointments at several institutions worldwide. His visiting positions include the Riverside, Santa Barbara and Berkeley campuses of the University of California, the Ohio State University in Columbus, North Carolina State University in Raleigh, University of Chicago, McMaster University in Hamilton and University of Frankfurt as well as the Indian Statistical Institute, and the Indian Institute of Technology. Dr. Jain has authored more than 100 research articles that have been published in professional journals. He was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award, 1999- Ohio University. A life member of the Indian Mathematical Society, he is also a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He has delivered Professional lectures at mathematical meetings all over the world and has been the organizer of conferences on many topics in Abstract Algebra. He is an executive editor of the East-West Journal of Mathematics and executive editor of the Journal of Algebra and its Applications, published by World Scientific Press. He has supervised 18 Ph.D. dissertations in noncommutative rings, modules, and applied linear algebra.

About the Author
Chris Prouty is the author of "Empress Taytu and Menilek II: Ethiopia 1883-1910". She shared the responsibilities of Foreign Service with her husband, Eugene Rosenfeld, while fulfilling speaking engagements, writing assignments, and participation in theatre activities in four countries. Eugene Rosenfeld was Director of the U.S. Information Service in Addis Ababa, which was one of the many USIA posts he held during his 35 years of government service. After four years as press attache at the Embassy in London, he retired to Washington in 1975.
