Very evocative book

I didn't know what to expect from this book. I decided to read it because a Jane Austen biographer said this was one of Austen's favorites.
It is a year in the life of a village and its people. No calamities or catastrophes-- the people have their problems but all seems so much more serene than life today. The focus is the children,the flowers,the lives of the residents and the changes in the seasons.
The forward, written by Thackeray's daughter, illuminates and provides a lot of information I would not have had otherwise.

a little too flowery

While I wanted to give this 3 and 1/2 stars, I couldn't give it 4 stars. Good description takes you to the place of the book's setting, but the descriptions here often were fraught with too much flowery prose that prevented the reader from traveling along with the author to "our village." Her descriptions of the animals and people that inhabit the village were much more interesting. I finished the book out of sheer stubbornness.

Nature walk

Skip the forward. It is twenty percent of the book and could have been done in a paragraph or two. The actual story is a series of walks with an elderly woman and her fur companions over a year of changing climate in an English village in the
early 1800's. I think she wrote it for herself ,to re-read in the years when she was no longer able to take those walks.
