The proliferation of violence is arguably one of the most crucial topics of concern in an era of ethnic wars on one hand, and cultural debates about what constitutes violence in arenas of pornography, nationalism, race relations, the media, even environmental issues on the other. Violence and its Alternatives fills the existing gap in the literature on violence with a collection of essays from the most influential writers in the fields of politics, psychology, sociology, gender studies, and race studies. Methodologically diverse and intellectually wide-ranging, it appeals alike to specialists, students, and an interested public. This collection has two features not found in any other discussions of violence: first, a full spectrum of views ranging across disciplines, from now-classic treatments of the subject by philosophers such as Hannah Arendt and Frantz Fanon to postmodern considerations of violence embedded in social structures from the likes of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida; and second, the first interdisciplinary study of nonviolence, a thoughtful and serious look at the alternatives to violence from spiritual leaders such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. A sobering look at power and its exploitation, Violence and its Alternatives nonetheless offers optimism and hope through the systematic exploration of non-violent strategies for a more peaceful community.

Review
"[An] extraordinary range of material that interrogates the role of violence in a diverse, coherent, balanced, and profoundly challenging manner. I can think of no better introduction to this ultimate political question, and I strongly recommend this fine book be widely read and studied." - Richard Falk, Princeton University

A comprehensive examination at cross-cultural violences.
By A Customer
This interdisciplinary reader covers definitions of violence and looks at violence in relation to law, gender, race, nationalism and class. Finally, it examines nonviolence alternatives as put forward by leaders such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
I originally picked this book up as a supplementary reader for a course on Gandhi. I wanted to have more cohesive understanding at the many ways violence affects our social landscape. It, and others, has found itself in a well-respected place in my personal library.
While its language is more academic than layman, I think it is very accessible for those who have an interest in the social dynamics of violence. Its wide variety of topics are sure to interest all readers.
We need to understand the root causes of violence if we ever hope to stop it. This book is an excellent beginning to understanding our global culture.

This marvellously edited book by Dr. steger is a wonderful reader on understanding violence and nonviolence. If you want to understand how our history has been shaped by violence and non-violence, this is a must read. All the great writings in the book are written by great theorists like Arendt and Martin Luther King,jr.,etc., which are really convenient for readers like me who are interested in writing papers on this subject.
