ABOUT REPRISALS
In the teeming market of a Cambodian village, Rina runs into the officer who murdered her father thirty-five years ago during the Khmer Rouge regime.
What follows is the deeply moving portrait of how she seeks revenge, against the backdrop of a nation still coming to terms with this tragic era of its history.

As Rina spends months watching Touch Pheng, a broken relic of the arrogant young camp commander she knew, haggling over mangoes and resting in the shade, memory and grief twist in unexpected ways, transforming her in the process. Her husband, her best friend, and her best friend’s husband all have their ideas of how Rina should deal with this killer. But Rina must make up her own mind, leading to a final scene that is likely to haunt you with its ambiguity and beauty for years to come.

Bestselling novelist and National Book Award finalist Alan Lightman (Einstein’s Dreams, The Diagnosis) has always been known for his lyrical gifts and his knowledge of the human heart. But rarely has his mastery come quite so close to showing us our human core. Stunning in the simplicity of its prose, this is a story about the conflict between family and self, compassion and revenge, national and personal identity.

Can time heal all wounds?
By J. Chambers
I'm old enough to remember when the Khmer Rouge Communist party ruled Cambodia for a few years in the late 1970s. Under the brutal rule of Pol Pot and others, approximately two million Cambodians died from political executions, disease, starvation, and forced labor. These deaths are often considered a genocide, and are commonly known as the Cambodian Holocaust.

Alan Lightman's story "Reprisals" takes place in recent times, but the story is shaped by events that took place during the Khmer Rouge rule. While shopping at the local village market, Rina, a Cambodian wife and mother of four children, recognized the former Khmer Rouge camp commander who ordered her father's murder 33 years earlier. The man was now old and frail and appeared harmless, but Rina's only thought was to take revenge. She could have followed him and easily killed him, but she hesitated. Over the next few months she continued to encounter the man in the market, but she did nothing while she plotted her revenge. She even engaged the man in conversation. But could she kill him?

The outcome of the story was a bit surprising to me, but considering human nature and our ability to offer compassion to those we had only bitterness and hatred for, perhaps it made perfect sense. In any case, it's a very well written and compelling story.

Like a Fine Wine
By Marie Eckstein
This story gets even better with age and reflection. I like to think that we, as humans, are really capable of forgiveness--or at least acceptance--in place of revenge.

a remarkable story
By dch822
I felt like I was walking through the market stalls in a rural Cambodian village right alongside the characters -- just a fantastic, riveting story that's exceptionally well-written. REPRISALS is simultaneously a heart-breaking and inspirational read. Yes it's fiction -- but it's drawn from the real life horrors of Cambodia's killing fields and it's a really powerful story.
