Software projects are often late and over-budget and this leads to major problems for software customers. Clearly, there is a serious issue in estimating a realistic, software project budget. Furthermore, generic estimation models cannot be trusted to provide credible estimates for projects as complex as software projects.
This book presents a number of examples using data collected over the years from various organizations building software. It also presents an overview of the non-for-profit organization, which collects data on software projects, the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group. This data collection is based on the ISO standards for measuring the functional size of software.

About the Author
Alain Abran, PhD, is a Professor and the Director of the Software Engineering Research Laboratory at Université du Québec, Canada. He is also Co-Chair of the Common Software Measurement International Consortium. He was the international secretary for ISO/IEC JTC1 SC7. Dr. Abran has over 20 years of industry experience in information systems development and software engineering.

A fundamental resource for estimating software projects

There are basically two approaches to estimating software projects. The first approach is where someone wants to know the cost of a software project, then you go forth and develop an estimate for this project, and then it just disappears, and you perform some more one-off software project estimates for other projects as time moves forward. This book does not cover the first approach just described, but covers a much more mature and rewarding approach where you perform an initial estimate, and revisit the project as it progresses through the software development life cycle, and then build productivity models to enable the organization to get better at building software.
The book has a web reference which allows readers to download additional supplementary material in the form of slide presentations which help to reinforce understanding of the material in the book. For those organizations that have reached a sufficient level of maturity, this book presents a very clearly written and mathematically based approach to the concept of contingency planning, and how it can be used to manage contingency funding when it is needed.
Alain Abran describes the occurrence of wedge-shaped datasets, and also explains in clear and simple language the definition of extremely useful criteria in software project estimation, such as the coefficient of determination, error of an estimate, and the prediction level of the model. The author also introduces the process that interested users can start to build datasets using the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group (ISBSG), which provides detailed comparisons based on existing benchmarking data from practically every type of software that has been developed from all industries and countries.
